Refused entry
I have just read on [ forgive me for I have sinned ] another forum, of an Eriba Troll being refused entry, the reason being the door is on the wrong side,
has anyone had this happen to them?

What have I told you about reading those tabloid forums David?
Ridiculous, isn't it? I'd love to turn up with a British Made Touring Caravan or Motorhome built for the European market. Toffee nosed twits!
Not sure that's legal. It stinks of discrimination.

It shows the importance of reading a sites terms and conditions before booking, I nearly got caught out like that once when I had the Ford ranger.
Strictly speaking the ranger is a "commercial vehicle" I know because I had to pay VAT on it when I bought it. The site I was thinking of going to had a no commercial vehicle policy so it always pays to check, I went somewhere else.....................
After that I always check the website or ask when I book.

Can someone explain to me what difference it makes where your door is? What do they do about caravans that have the door at the back? Surely you can do what you ike on your pitch - turn your van around etc.....according to the sun.......

Ummmm......no.
You WILL park no more than 6" from the white peg
You WILL park with your tow hitch pointing outwards
You WILL put your pyjamas in the drawer marked 'PYJAMAS'
etcetera etcetera etcetera.
Some sites are less so, but many are extremely strict on these matters.

As many of you will know we've had foreign van's since 1991 until 2015 so our door was on the wrong side. It always amazed me that I had to nose in which with an Eriba is difficult enough but with a large single axle Burstner it's almost impossible! OK if you can drive through a pitch BUT to man handle a van of any size is ridiculous, although I have done it many times!!
So there I am on my pitch adhering to what I've been told by the wardens andvon pitches all around me people have cars parked on grass (instead of the allocated alongside van space), their awning is over the side of their pitch (because they hav'nt bothered to move the van over), they unscrew the cap on their waste water collector to save emptying it so often! they are in 3rd gear driving around the site (5mph is tick over in 1st, not 7960000rpm in 3rd) I'm sure by now you get my drift.
I have seen people in large wwb removing up to 6 black plastic bags of debris / rubbish at the end of their stay, I can't refer to them as "mingers" as I was told off once before for that
My point is if rules are going to be enforced then enforce them ALL not just the select few! It must be ever sl easy as a warden to tell someone on arrival that "because your door is on the wrong side you will have to nose in" after all there is'nt much arguement when you've travelled often many miles and paid your deposit etc.
Since we sold our van we hav'nt looked back and bearbin mind I was born and lived in a caravan until I was 13, owned campers, motorhomes, caravans etc since 1975, this was our view last week.
Very few vans have a back door although there are a few about, and I've seen doors on both sides to although not recently.
All the best to ALL of you enjoying your Eriba, long may you continue to do so

I think post #5 and post #6 sums it up.
Islay, who is in France, states the French attitude to it all whereas Rambling Robin gives us the typical British attitude.
I bet all those "British" made Caravan owners with their doors on the "CORRECT" side enjoy a lovely care free holiday on the continent every year and many are exasperated by the number of foreigners they come up against who will insist on having their doors on the "WRONG" side.

I know one should never generalise but experience suggests that whereas we British make rules and then go out of our way to enforce them to the letter, the French make rules and then interpret them as best suits them.
I have never had any problems on French campsites where the attitude has always been, "N'importe où" and "Comme vous voulez." (Where and how you like.) To be fair, most British sites I've been on have been reasonable but every now and again the pitch police have been round to check that we have pitched 'correctly'.

And leave feedback on sites like UKcampsite and Tripadvisor as well as FaceAche (or whatever that site where everybody posts pictures of themselves and the things they're about to eat is called).

Well, feeling particularly mischievous today I rang and asked them why they only accepted British made caravans. The very nice lady said when I asked if it was because the door was on the "wrong" side...yes it was. Definitely discrimination. I shan't be using any of their parks at all.

In the UK we mostly stay on C&CC sites and usually the warden's concern is to advise us to pitch where we will best catch the morning sun (or afternoon if we wish). We comply with the rules on the odd occasion when using other sites. My response to being told that my door is on the "wrong" side is "No, my door is on the right side!"
