Yes, shippers, that would appear to support the view over here that Motorhome sales are increasing year on year over Caravan sales. A reflection of a more affluent society maybe?

While Motorhome sales might be increasing we still have not seen the effects of the various pollution schemes that are being adopted in nearly all European countries . It would seem to me that vehicles that have large diesel engines are going to be hit hard. In fact I can see that the very essence of camping with a caravan or motorhome becoming very difficult. Unless some alternative fuel is made available .

"Yes, shippers, that would appear to support the view over here that Motorhome sales are increasing year on year over Caravan sales. A reflection of a more affluent society maybe?"

Most (British) people I have met in recent years with a big expensive motor home have bought it with either 1) a large lump sum from pension, 2) a large lump sum from public sector redundancy (arising from 'austerity programme') 3) a finance deal with today's historically low interest rates or 4) by simply using capital which is attracting almost zero interest (very much the minority). 1-3 of these things will likely soon be a thing of the past, so I am not sure it is necessarily a measure of a more affluent society or that the trend will be sustained.

Also, for most people we know with them, who go away for relatively short periods, it makes little economic sence when they are sat unused most of the year (same with caravans but the outlay isn't quite so large). Our T5 camper is used as our daily vehicle as well as us being away in it 4/5 months of the year in it....well, not for long but it has justified our investment in it.

It already is. Petrol, the 'very essence' to which you refer, well, in France at least.

See what I did there?

Seriously, the British motoring public were conned into buying diesels by a government desperate for its 'green' credentials to be recognised on the mistaken belief that reducing motor vehicles' carbon dioxide emissions would significantly impact on global warming or 'climate change' as it is now called. The truth is that other emissions from diesels (such as oxides of nitrogen and nano particles) are far more worrying and are now known to be causing serious health issues particularly in young children and the elderly in high-pollution areas such as cities.

Meanwhile, those of us who made a conscious decision to run petrol powered cars are still being penalised through the annual vehicle tax and this can no longer be justified either on environmental or moral grounds.

Probably the rush to buy a new motorhome will now slow down as the updated road tax from April 2017 will nobble new vehicles over £40,000 and very dirty engines will have a first year charge of £2000....

Interesting.
There are more and more towns here refusing camper vans access. They cause such chaos and traffic jams. That said, there are squillions of them here - and they all look shiny new.
Last year while camping in Clisson ( a really beautiful Italianate town near Cholet) the manager told us that she was seeing more and more caravans. I also noticed last autumn while visiting a camper van/caravan show here that there were many more caravans than in previous years so who knows what the future holds!

It would appear that petrol is not safe either wether it be "essence" or "san plomb".

I think the first sentence of this article puts things in perspective,

"Diesel fumes are significantly more damaging to health than those from petrol engines, according to research which shows that related air pollution contributes to lung disease, heart attacks, asthma and other respiratory problems."

So, we had our letter this morning introducing the new image Caravan and Motorhome Club.

Also two new stickers to display in the window. Fat chance of that.

I think the sticky banner is misleading suggesting it has been the caravan and motorhome club since 1907 .
