Sat-nav and map apps

I'm curious to know if there are any particular recommendations for satnav apps - as opposed to dedicated satnav devices - that are well rated here?
Offline maps are vital, so Google maps is fine. There are others such as navmii and co-pilot which seem to get very mixed reviews - real world feedback would be a real bonus.
Thank you

My experience with the sat nav when towing has been mixed and on occasion downright frightening.
When planning journeys now I always use road maps, stick to main roads and motorways and write out a list of towns and road numbers for the use of my navigatrix.
Where I have found the sat nav useful is when lost in a city and trying to find my way back to my planned route.
Not a helpful post (my apologies) but while I'll happily use the sat nav when not towing, it's a different matter with a caravan on the back.

Don't have a phone, tomtom satnav here.
As with all satnav devices ............ apps or dedicated device ......... planning the route is the main thing, setting go via "....." is a useful way to get it to take the route you want to travel.
Also not using the "shortest route" option that is almost guaranteed to bung you down a single track road somewhere along the route.

Cannot help with apps but you can get satnav maps for caravan/motorhome use that will keep you away from narrow roads etc.
I remember you could buy one through the caravan club.
My tomtom is for such use and I put into it the size of 'my outfit' and it plans the route accordingly.

I could not agree more. I ended up on a mountain track in Wales 3 years ago. Almost dark. We literally crossed a stream on a bridge made from a few railway sleepers. Large folding camper in tow! Met a farmer on a Quad bike with his collie that could not believe his eyes.. all we could do at that stage was "keep going" and eventually we made it to an approved road'. So much for Garmin, thanks a zillion for that particular route! No doubt that was the 'Shortest Route' or whatever it was attempting to provide us with. I would be very interested in loading up with the above mentioned maps for larger vehicles, I often wondered how the Trucker folk get on with their Sat Navs in far flung places. Hope they don't have to operate with the same maps that I have .

We have two satnavs in our vehicle !
The Nissan xtrail has inbuilt navigation and then we have our tomtom that we set up for use with a caravan.
HOWEVER both of these are often overuled by the 'navigator' aka 'the management' who sits with her maps
and guides and with whom I have absolute confidence....honest
All three voices are female but am I stressed when I arrive at the destination ? Cool as a cucumber...honest

Here maps. Here's the link to the Help page which you might want to have a read of to see if it's the app for you. Believe that I read somewhere that Here now belongs to Mercedes-Benz. https://help.here.com/android/maps/#g268

Some interesting thoughts - thank you. I should mention that my navigatrice is fully operational, and we do have drawers full of OS maps, so navigation and route planning themselves are no real issue.
What brought this up was last year getting around a large town centre somewhere - normally I use google earth to 'drive' the route beforehand, but reality, roadworks and town planners who feel that brown tourist signs are more important on roundabouts than road numbers and arrows - followed by signs that are so overgrown they are literally a hazard, bad lane markings etc - well it all got a bit fraught.
The MH had a nice built in nac screen and so one of the conditions of getting the Eriba was some form of sat-nav backup to show us where we actually are as opposed to the la-la land of some town maps. Also as we're planning some long trips there are just only so many maps you can carry at one time.
I've taken a look at Copilot-Caravan which was the go-to app for planning routes with vans but the new version is so bad it is useless.
Nothing in CC these days - it was more a question of just seeing if anyone had any particular experiences of anything that stood out. I'm just loath to spend dosh on a dedicated sat-nav device - and having met more than one polish artic driver with his wing mirrors embedded in the hedgerows about 500 yards down the road I know the accuracy of this technology is less than 100% :) As a matter of interest all the apps I have tried so far direct one down the same lane which is about as suitable for large vehicles as a chocolate teapot.

We have used Tom Tom sat navs for some years now. There has been the occasional cock up but in general they have really benefitted our travelling experience especially when abroad. Of course it is sensible to use maps as well and to be aware of the journey way points etc.
It is a great help that our Eriba should go wherever the car can.

Good point Tony I always work on the principle if the towing mirrors fit through a gap the van will, the big worry is meeting something coming the other way on a single track road.
