Well both Eribas have had their bottoms looked at this morning (running gear service) and ours has had new stabiliser pads.

A very thorough job yet again from Will Close and his nephew Mobile Servicing - South Wales

We got his name from the thread JohnE published some years ago.

Mobile Caravan Engineers

One little thing which is now very obvious but I have failed to check periodically is the towing electrics pins. They have a slight split in them which should be carefully opened out a little with a small flat blade screw driver from time to time to ensure a good contact (especially the common earth).

I believe Mr Close will be visiting Taffy soon.

Many folk ask how regularly they should get their van serviced which made me feel a little remiss as the last time Will visited was the summer of 2014. Since then the van must have done at least 12,000 miles . However, the brakes, bearings and all other things checked were fine.

Yes us to - we had Birchwood Mobile caravan services of Ipswich do ours. Rupert Moody is also very thorough and a very nice chap to boot. We needed a new gas pipe (apparently ours was out of date) but everything else was fine and dandy. It does peeve me though that you have to have new one-shot hub nuts every time the brakes and bearings are checked, what was wrong with castellated nuts and a split pin?

From one of my other topics

Zitat

Standard rubber pigtails are always dated and last for 5 years from new, Stainless Steel pigtails are rated for 20 years but cost 3 times as much there is an over all saving in the long run but more important there is less chance of residue damaging the regulator with Stainless Steel pigtails.

Just a point of interest but is the German TUV test for caravans very much the same as a running gear check?

I was told by a young German with an elderly van that vans over 15 years old cannot obtain a 100km/hr sticker but there's a photo on Facebook of an Eriba well over 15 years old, having a TUV test.

Deeps?

Thanks Hob. I noticed there was a date on the old pipe which Rupert gave me to dispose of but I didn't know there was a five year expiry on them - useful to know.

Here we go again. The test you are referring to, Roger, is named the Hauptuntersuchung (HU) or in English, main inspection/main examination.

TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) or in English, Association for Technical Inspection, is just one of several organisations authorised to conduct this test along with GTU and Dekra to name but two.

The HU for caravans is quite comprehensive and would take far too long to list here. However, as a pensioner with time on his hands LOL, here is an image of the Checklist provided by GTU from which you might want to spend a few minutes with Google translating the main headings. Feeling benevolant this morning LOL, I've highlighted the sections applicable to Caravans due to the fact that Mobile Homes are also included in the list.

With regards to the 100 tempo limit - can't say that I've ever heard or read of that and even a quick search around a couple of Caravan Oldtimer forums doesn't throw up anything. It's important to remember, though, that this 100 tempo limit and it's associated sticker only applies in Germany where it is issued. When travelling through other territory the rules and regulations of that territory apply of course.
As an aside, one sometimes sees Caravans sporting the letter 'H' on their number plates. This denotes Oldtimer but it is not obligatory to have and in fact many owners choose not too as it only attracts increased road tax. Why? Don't ask me.
