In the heat

We're picking up our new Eriba Touring in May and will be taking it to the South of France in June. We've never owned an Eriba before so wondering do they get very warm in the heat?

We have always carried a small 230v fan. Useful at night to help sleep, and we have sometimes plugged it into a timer so it only runs for a few hours.
If handy you can also fit a couple of 12v computer fans on the fridge to help it when temperatures can get into the 30's. These work best when located behind the top vent and suck the hot air away, as opposed to behind the bottom vent blowing the hot air upwards.
You can hide a switch behind the drawer front. I did not want to cut into the 12v circuit as I may want to keep the fans running at night and the 12v isolation switch to lights would have then also cut the fridge fans. I got a feed to this directly from the caravan battery with a pair of in-line fuses.

If you are handy with a soldering iron you could fit a thermostatic system for switch-on-and-forget operation of the fridge cooling fans.

You may not need any extra cooling for the fridge if your van is new, I did a test on my previous 2012 Familia and it coped ok in the hot weather, it was 36 degrees outside the van and the fridge was at 3.5 degrees. Maybe the new fridges are more efficient or it could be that in ten years time they will need extra cooling fans? It's certainly good to know that it can be modified to help with the cooling

Hi

Thanks for the feedback. The van is new so hopefully I won't need to do the fridge modification as I'm not confident in
doing that kind of thing.

We've got a fan so will take that with us just in case.

Another alternative, going over the top to some is to be found in the centre of this photo. Table top LEC fridge and freezer for months stay in the heat.

My undercover Welsh correspondents reliably inform me that this year, in addition to their existing fridge and freezer, the Randas will also be carrying a twin-tub washing machine/spin dryer.

See here

The manufacturers have assured Roger that the machine can, at a pinch, accommodate a pair of his Y-fronts.

Oh that's untrue AND you know it. Everyone on here knows that I go Commando on our long trips and here's the proof (well almost)

If you rememebr, there was a lot of discussion about it in 2014 Randa's 2014 Tour

Not only saves on washing but is a great way to keep everything cool.

In 2010 we camped outside Dijon. An English couple had one of those portable washing machines and swore by it for annual 30+ days away. It coped with all summer clothing but they could not do bed sheets. From memory the in-laws used to take it away over winter to Spain.

Yes. Didn't we agree it was a 'spot the ball' competition?

That's nothing. we met a Dutch couple in France the carried, in a very small van, towed by a Vauxhall Arsra petrol, a twin tub washer and a full size domestic Air Conditioner + every conceivable domestic electric cooking item - their theory was that they had to use the electricity they pay for - seemed to work well ! Well the caravan did but the Vauxhall had problems !
