It's a talking point.
And an interesting one too.

The first time we went away we took too much, including the awning. I think Soplair should put a health warning on those @#$¥¥₩ things. Ditched that and a heap of other stuff and we now have lots of spare storage space. I guess it depends on our priorities. Ours are mainly food and drink. We don't venture to darkest Africa so can get what we need when there - plus we like trying local specialities. I do take a lot of shoes - you never know.......Yann likes to have his tools...... each to their own.
I've been doing weight watchers to compensate 😥

It's surprising how much one can leave out as being unnecessary when the subject is given real thought. We've always carried along a Fiamma waste water tank which, with it's 23 litre capacity, only needed emptying every three years based on our average water consumption. Along with it being stored in the vans bathroom during transit and the necessary need to periodically give it a good clean to prevent build up of that horrible black stuff, the blessed thing is simply unnecessarily large and heavy. So that's gone and has been replaced with a small plastic bucket costing 1€ from the local 1€ shop which for hygiene reasons can be emptied daily if necessary without any effort whatsoever and which can also double up for fetching a few litres of fresh water now and again to wipe off any unsightly dirt or bird droppings when on site. So - roughly 5 kilos saved there then.

Also laid to one side is that huge lump of metal commonly referred to as a gas bottle. We don't do winter camping, carry an electric hot air heater for any particularly chilly nights especially out in the awning and which runs of the campsites electricity supply that we've paid for, and neither do we cook in the van using our portable Campingaz stove with appropriate gas supplies instead so carrying two 6kg gas bottles we considered being totally over the top. If at the end of a season (or a few seasons) the gas bottle is say maybe only a third full then we'll replace it for a full one because if we can't afford to sacrifice a third of the content then we shouldn't really be caravaning at all.

Another lump of heavy metal that will get left behind in the future is the Milenco noseweight gauge. It will be called into duty for checking the noseweight prior to the trip and subsequently left behind as we are highly unlikely to purchase vast quantities of gold during the trip that will change the overall weight of the caravan to any great degree. In the same vain, over the winter I have given the 'tools' careful thought. In the past I picked up a nice plastic box from the 1€ shop and threw tools into it as though they were going out of fashion. My vast collection of open-ended spanners ranging from 3 to 17 in size have been drastically culled as the chances of being asked to remove the nuts from a HGV wheel are pretty remote. So too have multiple individual screw drivers been laid to one side to be replaced with a single tool with several bits. All in all, the tools I now carry will actually fit something on the caravan and not simply be excess baggage.

I never realised just how many tent pegs we have collected over the years with some of them large and heavy enough to hold a ship up when in dry dock. Once again a careful cull to ensure that we carry only those necessary in addition to a few spares has resulted in quite a bit of weight being saved.

I go through every cupboard and locker at the end of a season and if there's anything not used in the last few trips it gets removed.

We saved a load of weight one year and forgot our folding chairs, we had to sit in the awning cross legged sat on cushions like Bedouins ...
