John,
Thanks a million for that. I think it is perhaps a tad beyond my electrickery know how ( not know how ) I understand in principle but metering it out whilst connected up to 220v is not something I would relish. I will hopefully muster up one the Sparks that work with me and I'll make the tea, fetch tools and tell funny stories and the likes. May take a while but I will report back. I will make a note of fuses etc. for him as you advised.
Thanks again,
Chris

Charger Fuse Holder.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)Many thanks for replies. Problem solved and I am delighted to have fixed it myself. It was somewhat “ mechanical” in the end. I metered the SCHAUDT Charger . There was power going in but not a peep coming out. So I opened it and had a good look inside and found a tiny wire from the windings to the fuse holder had disconnected ( it does have its own fuse inside) . You can perhaps see it on the photo. The tiny solder joint had disconnected from vibration at some stage and the fuse ( 1.6A) had also blown. I borrowed a soldering iron, replaced the fuse and bingo ! Lights on and humming away – literally “humming” away. Happy ending … so far so good.

Well done, Chris, you were lucky it wasn't anything too serious.

By the way, it's a common misconception that electrical equipment relies on conductors, electrons, potential differences and the like to function properly.

Well it doesn't - it actually runs on smoke, and faults are more often than not caused by the stuff leaking out.

When you see the smoke, you know you've got trouble

I spend much of my time in the old car world and, as John says, its all about the smoke and keeping it in the wires. That's why having a handy supply of this on the shelf is helpful under such circumstances..
