An embarrassing thread...

Hi all, forgive the content to this thread, but I feel the need to discuss 'the toilet'...

We have just bought our Famillia and love it, however, being 6ft tall and rather overly upholstered, the loo is so small!! It's obviously an essential, so I wondered if anyone else has had this same problem and somehow managed to adapt it...Maybe remove the washbasin and cupboard... Is this a good idea, or is it just a case of live with it?!!

The removal of basin and cupboard as you are suggesting I have heard done before. Another issue you need to consider though is the height. I am 5'8" and 13 stone. In previous vans I found the loo cramped because of the curve in the roof. The latest vans post 2010 are taller and more roomy around the shoulders when standing up. If you have one of the later vans then you may find the removal of basin and cupboard does the job. If not you may be little better off.

Would removing the door help? You could replace it with a curtain?

Hi there, thanks for that info, our van is a 1995, so does have quite a sloping ceiling, I find it's the width of the area that is a problem, without going into finer details..lol. i.e. length of legs. I wonder if the job of removing the sink is huge and just how difficult it would be to remove the plumbing... All things that can be done in the future. I just think that the benefit of having a bit more width when seated, may just be worth it??

That is also an idea, but I do like the door in situe and it's not really an issue to leave the door open if necessary I guess??

If anyone has any photos of a toilet with the sink and cupboard section removed (famillia 1995), would they mind posting them, I would be so grateful. I obviously do not want to start removal if as Colin suggested, it's not going to be worth it??

We went to buy a Familia for our first caravan, having graduated from a VW campervan several years ago and Steve the boss at AL talked us out of it, demonstrating that he could put his hand in the two sinks, washroom and kitchen. We have a Puck L with a Porta Potti under the sink and use sites with facilities.

I think Eribanaut removed the toilet area completely from his last Triton. He should know how easy it is to do and if it can be removed in sections. Perhaps the next time he logs in he can explain it.

Hi Jan, I did remove the whole toilet/washroom from our 04 Triton and turned it into a wardrobe, it took about 2 to 3 hours if I remember correctly, it wasn't too difficult, but depending on how yours has been put together you may have to remove the toilet first then put it back afterwards, also take out the shower tray. I'm sorry I never took any pictures.

Hi Eribanaut! Thank you for the info. I think we're thinking more of just removing the sink and it's undercupboard, but leaving the loo.. Just so there is a little bit more leg room. Not sure if it's going to be feasable, but I think it's probably worth a try. Just out of curiousity, did you find that the 'formica' or whatever the general cover is on the walls in there, goes behind the washbasin fitment? If not, suspect that I will have to recover the walls in there too... Still humming and haaa'ing.... I think it would give just a little bit of extra room, maybe, just enough... who knows..? Thank you again x

In my 04 the decoration didn't go behind the panel but a wallboard did so I just decorated it but there was no plastic waist trim so I "no nailed" a thin strip of wood on as a trim.
Why I said you may have to remove and reinstall the toilet is that the side panel of the vanity unit went behind the side of the toilet on mine and so might be difficult to remove.
The shower tray I removed so that we had a flat floor, just blocked up the 1" waste hole in the floor and put a piece of carpet down.

Why don't you build a mock up in your home bathoom using sheets of cardboard etc and the measurements from your van to see how much space you would have with the basin removed?

Yes, that's actually not a bad idea, I need to figure out just how much room there is seated... Of course, I could always just lose 6 stone, then the 'job' in hand wouldn't be needed lol....But, I've been saying that for decades, so I think that there is probably zero hope of me doing it...lol So, mock up first, it is then! Thank you.
