Eriba Familia Year 2000 Fuse Board

Hi Folks. I have a Year 2000 Eriba Familia 3 berth which I have found out recently has been an import from Belgium and does not come wired for the use of a leisure battery. I got a local auto electritian out to hopefully put the appropriate wiring in but he became a bit stuck as he had never integrated 12 volt and 240 volt together before. He tried to wire it straight into the fuse board. After a bit of time he thought it perhaps needed some transformers and possibly relays. When he was fiddling about with it, he removed many of the female spade connectors from the right hand side of the fuse board and since then, my water pump does not work and it constantly blows 7.5 amp blade fuses. I telephoned him back to ask him if he had possibly put the female spade connectors on the wrong ones but he was adamant that he hadn't and said it was just a coincedence. I am reluctant to get him back and get charged £45 per hour when I don't think he really knows what he is doing.

Does anyone out there know which of the female connectors should go on to the appropriate male connectors?

I will list how it is wired up just now.

On the right hand side of the fuse board 1 - 13:

1 - Empty
2- Red Wire
3 - Empty
4 - Empty
5 - Blue Wire
6 - Blue Wire
7 - Empty
8 - Blue Wire
9 - Empty
No number 10
11 - Blue Wire
12 - Blue Wire

The 7.5 blade fuse just keeps blowing opposite numbers 3 and 4.

Does anyone know what the fault would be?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

John

Hi John

Unfortunately a leisure battery can't just be connected to your model of BIP unit without some modification to it and the caravan's wiring.

Your BIP doesn't have the capability to charge the battery from mains hookup, and the van doesn't include the wiring to enable charging from the car when en route.

The red and black wires shown in your pics don't appear to be original Eriba wiring - if these are the battery connections added by your auto electrician they have been connected incorrectly and should be removed (but disconnect from the battery first).

Your BIP supplies 12V AC for the internal lighting circuits and 12V DC for the water pump and blown air fan (if fitted).
The water pump appears to be connected to one of the ac outputs - it should be on Terminal 2, but that red wire's connected there.

This schematic shows your BIP's connections:

I've modified a number of older Eribas to incorporate a leisure battery and charger - if you'd like me to help please get in touch.

Hi johnnyguk, johnE is an Eriba service engineer who also owns an eriba, what he does not know about Eriba's can be put on a postage stamp. I had problems with my electrics, once again this BIP unit, which is French and few English electricians understand it as they are more familiar with ZIG units. Just to put your mind at rest, follow his advice and you won't go far wrong.

Hi John, Many thanks for your comments. The auto electritian was trying to get a leisure battery to charge up while I was driving the car while en route from the grey 6 pin socket at the towbar and ran a new lead with the appropriate socket up at the cupling end. He ran it under the chassis and through the floor under the kitchen. He did say he had never done one of these before and wasn't 100 % sure. He did say towards the end that he possibly needed a transformer or voltage stabalizer and possible relays. He was going to consult another auto electritian friend of his who thinks he has possibly done this type of job on a caravan before but I don't want to spend more money and achieve nothing as 90 % of the time I use the electrical hook up when on site but 10 % of the time they have no hook up pitches left if I stop somewhere unexpected. It was more just for a back up. I don't want to spend lots of money over £300 for the convenience of working the lights and water pump as it still won't work the refrigirator.

Is there a cheap alternative? If so, what would I require and roughly at what cost?

Many thanks. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge.

Give me a couple of days and I'll see if I can come up with a costed solution or three.

Planning a scheme for somebody else to implement has its risks as I'd need to make assumptions regarding your van's electrical configuration, and any deviation from those could cause problems. It would be better if you could bring the van to me, but of course, that might depend on how far away you are from me.

Hi Folks. Johnny G here again. Following my questions about the wiring and fuseboard in my year 2000 Eriba Familia, can anyone confirm if the wiring is on the correct male spade connectors numbers 1 - 12 as I had an auto electritian fiddling about with it and since then, the water pump does not work. I have took the black and red wires off as suggested by John E who is an Eriba Technician and that has stopped the 7.5 amp fuses continually blowing. I am in Edinburgh and it is not convenient as John E is in The Wirral. Many thanks for any help that is out there.

Cheers

Don't know anything about electrics. You're fairly close to Jandi though so it could be worth a call, just make sure you have plenty of time, sometimes they like to talk.

Hi Julie. Many thanks for your advice. I have been in touch with Jandi and spoke with Sandy who works for them.

Many thanks.
