Groaning Troll 550 GT 2004
Having sorted most of our problems out, our Troll 550GT 2004 still groans. Any suggestions please?

If you mean while being towed there could be a number of reasons

1 paint on the tow ball
2 rust on the tow ball
3 worn pads in the hitch
4 dirty pads in the hitch
5 hitch area needs the nipples greased for over run brake damper
6 a problem with the brakes

If its not been serviced for more than 2 years or if you don't know when the last service was or how many miles it may have done consider a service anyway.

As above.

Try rubbing the towball with fine emery paper or wet and dry to remove rust, paint, dirt etc then do the same to de-glaze the pads in the stabiliser.

Then, and this is important, clean the towball and pads with a cloth soaked in brake cleaner, alcohol or meths. You will be surprised how much muck ends up on the cloth.

Chances are, this will cure the problem.

Have replaced the pads with new ones, and it is cleaned before any journey, and has also been rubbed with wet and dry. Towball totally clean of any rust, paint or any other unwanted coating.

Can you hear the groaning all the time or only when travelling on roads at slower speeds?

Our always groans when towing around towns, over speed bumps etc but we don't hear it on fast roads.

Could it be possible that the engine noise drowns it when travelling on fast roads?

But have you been cleaning all the muck off with a suitable solvent after de-rusting and de-glazing? (You don't mention it)

It really is essential.

yes, I am sorry that I did not mention it. All the muck has been cleaned with solvent after de-rusting and de-glazing.

I religiously clean my tow ball with scotbrite pad and then spray with heavy duty brake cleaner wipe clean. Still groans

I had the groan this year on the final leg of my France trip. The ball looked nice and clean so I did not wipe as usual with the brake cleaner spray I carry. An obvious mistake.
Strange thing is the 3 x Alko hitches I have had on my vans have always groaned to some extent, but I do not remember this being the case with the Winterhoff I had on my 2006 Familia. This definetly felt to the hand a far nicer and more substantial piece of kit.

Mine groaned as above despite all the cleaning.
I eventually prised the friction pads out for a better look and found them to have a hard glaze. Scraped that off with my trusty penknife, a quick rub with wet&dry and replaced. No noise for the last three trips since :)
