I suppose it's one way of deterring theft of gas locker contents.
And on a more serious note, if it hinges could actually be a useful idea for some.

That's an interesting thought . Perhaps that's why the legs are positioned in that way and it does look as if there's something under the nearside of the wheel to suggest it could hinge sideways away from camera.

We have a rear wheel carrier on our 2007 Triton 430 which is a Dutch import, I believe. I seem to remember seeing a brochure showing this type of carrier on the cover which leads me to believethat they were made for a short period of time rather than an option. The carrier is not just bolted to the back of the van.The frame extends underneath the van so it is a very secure fit.
