Spare Wheel
Hi to everyone, as the login name suggests it's my first Eriba ownership and my first post, so please go easy on me !
I've read through some posts, but thought I would maybe get the "latest thinking" or tried and trusted thinking is also fine
My Familia 320 GT is fitted with a mover and as such I'm told the spare wheel carrier probably won't fit so at the moment it's carried in the car (or van I suppose) but with everything else needed to be taken, it's a right pain.
Question 1 - (a) Has anybody fitted a universal carrier underneath (i.e. drilled / screwed / bolted into the underside of the floor)? (b) If so, how thick is the floor without coming "inside" the van with the screws / bolts?
Question 2 - (a) Has anybody "modified" the Eriba carrier, to make it fit with the mover in situ?
I have another question that seems to get people going, regarding rear mount bike racks - so I'll test the water with that one in a new post.
I am / have been a member of other Forum's, so I'd be amazed if this hasn't been tackled before All help and advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Matt.
I managed to modify my spare wheel carrier to miss the motor mover articulating bar, its quite easy to do just don't over cook the bend. See the attached photo/link which explains..

A universal wheel carrier won't fit because the Eriba chassis is not a standard ALKO/BPW caravan chassis, it uses a heavy duty ALKO/BPW trailer 'T' chassis.

Slight change of subject, but with our Puck l the spare wheel is inside under one of the lockers and of course takes space. Wondering if there is a mod to mount it outside the van, say on the rear like a cycle carrier. When we had a T2 VW it was on the front under a self designed cover and looked cool as they say.

Hi Derek these rear wheel carriers appear to be quite rare, I wonder if they were an official Hymer accessory at some point. The Puck L is a bit unique in the Eriba models as it has the kitchen at the back, I would assume attaching anything heavy to the back could induce instability if your not particularly careful with the loading.

Derek,
a few thoughts for you in attempting to gain more space in the van.
- moving onto the rear wall might be a problem, even if you could find one of the rare rear mount kits with cover as you already have a lot of rear weight in the kitchen.
- how about a towball bracket on the front jockey wheel mounts for an adapted cycle carrier to take the wheel
- cheap option, a clear ikea zip bag for the wheel and put it in that big boot of your CMax - this is how we carried a spare car wheel when we had a VW Touran

I believe that Randa also carries a spare wheel in the back of his Touran although I'm not too sure regarding the IKEA zip bag. I would have thought that option would have been far too expensive with a Tesco carrier bag being more favourable.
Thanks. Good point about the rear weight, always got to watch that! The car has it's own spare in the boot, but yes the van spare would be OK in there. we'll see.

Does your Focus have a "space saver" spare wheel Derek? You know, one of those skinny ones with a big yellow label? Our Focus did although the boot well was plenty big enough to carry a proper spare once we got rid of the big lump of tailored foam to make up the space. I'm thinking that if you put the Eriba spare in the boot well then the skinny wheel would take up less space in the boot.
Better still, fill the boot well with other "unwanted on journey" junk and carry the car spare upright, behind the front seat when Touring. It sits in the rear foot well. We do and also do the same thing with the Eriba spare on the opposite side.
It makes both van and car spares easily accessible if you need to perform a Grand Prix wheel change Nothing worse than having to remove everything in the car boot to access the spare.
