Unless you've got the gas on and it's defective in some way, where is all the carbon monoxide coming from? Perhaps it's Pepe le Pew's farts! We use an oil filled radiator, close the roof and put a couple of windows on vent and Bob's ton oncle.

I don't think we are going to cover every scenario, however this event happened to us. We ate late one night cooking with all the gas hobs, outside there was a storm going on and blowing a gale. We didn't have the awning up so the door was shut, all the windows and roof vents were also closed. After a while the carbon monoxide alarm went off and it only cleared after I had vented the van.
I would imagine that without the alarm and then going straight to bed as we did could have had serious consequences... the question is if I had closed the poptop would it have exasperated the problem??

Hi Deeps, the gas hob is a naked flame, its just like using a camping stove in a confined environment.

with my massive experience of being in the van on two nights when the temperature dropped below freezing, I'm with RamblinRobin about the massive increase in condensation in freezing weather being an issue (This is even with just a small oil-filled radiator on). So I would now go with the roof down and a window slightly open, obviously nearer to Kath than to me!!!! The drips from the aluminium strip always fall on my head, so there is some justice there. I wonder why Hymer decided to add a vent over the bed on later models? Our 99 Troll doesn't have one.
Randa

As far as I can tell from photos they used to have vents in the door to provide compulsory ventilation. Presumably there were problems with people taping over them to cut draughts and/or corrosion or damp issues associated with that design. I don't know if older vans have the floor vents under the beds or not but I guess they would have a gas drop vent in the cupboard behind the heater if fitted.
You would have to work very hard indeed to get to hermetically seal a caravan - they are designed to prevent this happening. The roof is not a full contact seal either, there are gaps in various places.
I'm sure I would never leave the heater on at night, gas or leccy as bedding can get just too close to it. Yes I know the chances of igniting are minute on a low setting and the casing is only hand warm, but...... hence the separate non-oil filled mini rad for sub zero nights.

We have the roof ventilator over the pull out double bed in our 2016 Troll,. However one day when I was messing about under the corner seat cushions I noticed that there was also an extra dome type air vent on both sides more or less under the top of the beds. This seems to let in a lot of cool air in winter.

I feel sure that there is enough ventilation in our Troll to sleep with the roof down in freezing weather. Obviously we wouldn't use any heating but our oil-filled radiator.

We are going to York in a few weeks and might be able to try it out in more freezing weather. If so I'll report back. MikeT

We had our roof down one Boxing Day night when it closed itself due to the weight of snow on the roof. We're still here, didn't die of CO2 poisoning, mind you we nearly died from the shock. It makes a heck of a noise when the roof just collapses shut.

Mike T..... a couple of plastic disposable ‘glasses’ will cover the weird conical ventilators in the corners.

Can I ask a silly question?

If people get cold at night, why don't they either put an extra blanket on the bed or wear some thicker pyjamas?

Neither of these things involve running any kind of heater, lowering the top or having yards of insulation festooned round the interior like a half-inflated barrage balloon.

Am I missing a trick somewhere?

Admittedly Mrs P and I haven't been camping in really cold weather - not until we can re-schedule our Grand Tour of the Arctic Circle, at any rate - but there have been one or two occasions when we've woken up to a bit of hoar frost and we've never felt the need to pull the top down, never mind spark up the woodburner and leave it throbbing away all night.

If it does gets really cold we can always snuggle, but clearly that's best avoided if at all possible. Although the risk has subsided somewhat in the ensuing years, it was two separate instances of snuggling in 1987 and 1992 that are partly to blame for our current impecunity.

Maybe some of yous lot just need to man up and get some proper flannel PJs ...

In days long ago I'd sit around with a coat on in the house in order to make savings for proper furniture. Now in my later years, along with regular SCANs (Senior Citizens Afternoon Nap) I like to keep warm and will exercise any and all available options and if that means dropping the roof in contravention of what is stated in the manual then so be it.
