Battery charger on the blink?

2007 Triton 430, BIP controller 30.65100.84.
When at home van is plugged in to the mains on a time switch, one hour per day. In the past this has been sufficient to keep the leisure battery fully charged. I have noticed battery voltage slowly falling and increased the time to 1.30 per day to no avail, even though the voltage shows 13.7 when charging. I wondered if the battery might be failing (coming up for 4 years old).
I pulled out fuse F5 to stop the BIP trying to charge the battery and connected a Ctek charger. Battery now seems to hold it's charge OK even when disconnected from the Ctek for a couple of days.
At the same time as fuse F5 was pulled, I noticed that the voltage to the lights was reduced to the low 11 volts, which doesn't seem right to me.

So, is my BIP in failure mode?

I've looked at the two threads here on replacing the BIP, chrisrust's and Aaron Calder's, the latter seems the easiest. I might also consider fitting the latest controller, Schaudt CSV409A, but that would probably be too expensive.

Any other views on this please?

Supplementary on the above questions.
What does the Booster do? Does it just smooth out the supply from the towing vehicle? Would it be necessary to keep it in circuit with any of the alternative methods of battery charging?

Thanks Aaron.
I have PM'd JohnE to ask if he would kindly copy me the schematic of the modification to your BIP.
That mod seems to be the easiest way forward.
I already have a Ctek charger that I could connect (once I know where ) to try it out.

Can't seem to find any valid links to Amperor though. Are they still in business I wonder?

Hi Ray,
I have a new Ctek charger on a new battery, I keep it on 24-7, the Ctek is a very clever charger that charges the battery and performs a de-sulphide action which gives the battery a longer life.
I would advise to keep the Ctek on all the time and separate the battery from the van supply whilst doing so.
I am not sure about the BIP charger system you have, they are a bit old hat really.
If as you say the voltage drops quickly when your battery is placed on line then its the battery "sitting down" - or - theres a heavy consumer in action. You will have to get the multi-meter out.......
Im no electrician by the way, normally my electrical work ends in a green flash.

Hi Mike,
I agree entirely about the use of a Ctek charger and I am using one at the moment. Problem is I have to do a bit of work to the wood work to get at the battery terminals so that I can disconnect the BIP charger. My aim is to have the Ctek permanently fitted in place of the BIP so that my battery charging is pretty much fit and forget.
Work in progress ;)

Well, that worked out easier than expected.

After studying the wiring diagrams I looked at the switch next to the 230V mains isolator and realised that would be an easy route in to the 12Vdc side of the BIP.
I dropped the 230V connections off the transformer and plugged a 12V source in to the top of switch and hey presto, everything works as before.
JohnE did remind me of the legality of inhibiting the awning light whilst towing. I was going to use a spare terminal on the fridge relay but that was used up so I have ordered a 12V normally off relay for £4 which will switch on when the tow car is connected. Wiring the C/O contacts in reverse will give the desired effect for the awning light.
Very brief details as I'm just experimenting at the moment. Looking good though for a cheap and easy conversion

Hi Ray & all,
We have a 99 Triton which we brought home from Holland earlier this year.
It did not have a battery system.
I had a mover fitted with battery but as yet I have not tied the systems together. I fitted a mains supplied 13 amp rcd protected socket to feed the Ctek.
I won't bother with a car charger system as 12v to 12v chargers are pricey.
I plan - in the near future - to fit a manual change over switch to simply cut the 12v supply to lighting systems from BIP transformer and connect in the battery.
I want to keep it as simple as possible without any powered relays.
Mike
