Well it has arrived, 7.15 this morning the cuckoo started and it sounds the same here in France as in the UK, no accent at all

We had a pair in an oak near here but recent building work has moved them away.
I would love to hear one again, and Swifts calling.

I reckon it's always better to be woken by birdsong of whatever kind than be greeted with silence.

There's little more comforting to be stirred from sleep by a dawn chorus and then to drift off again. Sadly, in an awful lot of places, the dawn chorus has far fewer choristers than it used to have thanks to the changes in farming and predation by domestic cats.

On the subject of cuckoos, there's many a year I've been lucky enough to see a cuckoo or two round here when I'm out with the dogs. It's often involved a bit of sneaking along hedgerows, which is difficult with a Jack Russell who'd far rather eat it than look at it.

They're striking birds, and quite a bit bigger than you might think, though this depends entirely on how big you thought they were.

.

Ah Pete I was just going to add, has anyone actually seen one? Not many have I guess but I have.

we are lucky here, no pesticides and a wood attached to the land, all types of birds around, woodpeckers, buzzards, kestrals, blackbirds all the usual bluetits and finches plus heron, yes you are right about being woken but when they start at 4 am it can get tiring

I'd be worried if I woke up to silence that I hadn't actually woken up

My 89 year old Dad had to fill out a medical questionnaire recently. To the question "Mood on awakening" he replied "Surprised".

I've seen a couple, edge of the new forest so very lucky for wildlife. Haven't listened yet this year but one is usually here about now.

I have seen two together, I thought they were some sort of Hawk initially,
they used an oak tree about a field away from my house. I never managed
a photo though.
