I particularly like this bit Brian:- "Take Exit 10, signed Bayonne in green. Follow the D810 through to the Spanish border. Warning: this last toll-free alternative will take up to an hour longer than the motorway"
The first year of our retirement, we went on a three month tour of France and managed to get as far as St Jean de Luz without touching a peage. However, that last bit skirting Bayonne and cutting through Biarritz was hell. So much so that after camping at St Jean we decided to jump on a motorway as fast as we could.
However, although we had travelled with ease on French motorways many times on previous trips, this particular junction didn't have a toll booth on its slip road but we were immediately confronted by a large toll area as soon as we joined the carriageway. I sort of panicked and for some reason started to drag the Eriba through a 2 metre max. height gantry.
Realising my mistake, I decided to reverse out only to find that a large queue of rather irate French drivers has pulled up behind me. The geezer in the Merc soft top immediately behind me was particularly put out when he saw our van coming backwards at him.
Looking at the plastic fringe hanging down from the gantry in front, I judged it to be far higher than 2 metres so hoping there wasn't something more severe ahead, we pulled forward, took a ticket and drove on.
Many miles ahead at the next toll, we only had to pay for the car. I wouldn't advise doing the same think however, especially with a 2.2 metre Troll.

We use mainly back roads and have found a good book this year called "Back Roads France".
A DK EYEWITNESS TRAVEL BOOK.
ISBN 978-1-4093-8768-8.
I have read it and compared it to the areas we have visited already and it give a good representation of each.
I keep picking it to wet my appetite can't wait to be setting off again, we are book on the tunnel on the 7 th May and not coming bak until end of June.
Heading for the west coast on way to the pyrenees back through the Dordogne and the Loire.
If you put no toll roads in our sat nag it takes you on a mystery tour so we just trust it and get there when we get there. Doing this we have found some beautiful parts of France off the beaten track.

Last year we towed the Eriba down from Poitiers to Limoges on the N147. I would never use this road again - very heavy traffic, dangerous over-taking and all the rest of it.

Last year we decided on a direct route south from Sully-sur-Loire to La Châtre in the Indre region.
We soon picked up the D940 which took us from place to place via Bourges and it was the straightest road we can ever remember travelling on. Good road surface too.
