HELP
As a newbie, having a bit of a head banging time re eriba insurance looked at several recommended on here however, prices range from £73 to £250 BUT non to date included breakdown cover!! Do we need to get separate caravan breakdown cover etc? any help and advice would be greatly appreciated RevRy
Rev,
the insurance and breakdown cover are generally different things. The one exception I know of is with Lifesure. For an additional small fee, £20 ish, they offer a come out and try to fix you/take you to a garage with 30? miles cover, or at least used to.
Caravan insurance can be tailored to you exact requirements, setting desired level of cover for the van and similarly the contents. Check you household contents cover first as you may find it covers some/most of the vans contents. We had this with one company.
The breakdown cover is a bit of a minefield. Most covers are for the car. If the van is attached at the time of the car breaking down they will also recover the van, but the cover is for the car. If the van breaks down then very few companies will come out to recover it. The Caravan & Motorhome Clubs Green Flag is the exception. https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/insurance/...nsurance_mayday For about £80 you get full UK cover including home-call. Adding about £30 to this gets the same level of cover for a second vehicle etc. If you need to buy cover fro two cars this is a very competitive price as well as being a very good cover.

You prompted me to check my breakdown cover, which is free with Nationwide Flexplus current accounts (and provided by Brittania Rescue). It states:
• Caravans and trailers - your cover includes any caravan or
trailer that is attached to your vehicle.
The "cover" includes breakdown and recovery, so I assume that includes a situation where the caravan has a problem - eg flat tyre.
I hope that's the right interpretation, as I'm towing tomorrow...
Cheers all big help, it seems all the caravan insurers we rang today non included breakdown in their quotes so just wondered how folk managed or if they had any advice or suggestions on companies they had found helpful, ee it keeps the grey matter going lol RevRy x

We use Green Flag breakdown insurance which covers us for Trips to Europe. Green Flag also offer cover called Mayday Cover via a policy offered through the Caravan Club but I believe this is for UK only. Maybe wrong there ???
For Insurance cover of the Eriba we have just changed from using Saga who we had been with for about 5 years to Towergate who offered better cover for £70 less premium. Usually your car insurance cover includes towing the van except it is 3rd party cover only. You need to check your policy.

We've got Green Flag cover just paid £134.00 for twelve months covers both Phil and I in whatever vehicle we are in whether we own it or just as a passenger in someone elses vehicle. Includes cover for van and misfuelling. It might seem expensive but we have three cars between us none of which are in the first flush of youth and the oldest one is 53 (only slightly younger than me) Red Pennant is the international version of the cover which we have purchased on those occasions when we have ventured abroad.

Hi RevRy
I have been with the AA for car breakdown for a number of years for our Octavia Scout. When we got our Eriba in 2016 and started looking at breakdown cover for it I was shocked to discover that if I was towing with the Scout the Etiba would also be covered by the AA so I didn't bother changing. Our caravan insurance is with the Caravan & Camping Club but I wasn't over-impressed with my dealings with them and they were not cheap. I think I will look around again next year. MikeT

Mike Would double check your cover when towing as most only cover 3rd party for the van.

Check the small print. I had difficulty getting the RAC to come out as the electrics to the Eriba had disconnected and damaged by trailing so no way to repair it. I was asked if the tow car is OK, and when I said yes they informed me that breakdown covers your caravan if the tow vehicle is effected but if that is OK then the Caravan is not covered. I had full reimbursement by the company as I specifically requested Caravan breakdown, even if my car is OK and when they played the phone call back from he time of cover due to my complaint they agreed I was misled and reimbursed me and provided compensation. Had I not used the terminology then I would have lost out.
I found out the hard way and had to sit overnight in the car in a lay-by until daylight to be able to continue the journey with no indicators brake lights etc, and even though I asked for a loan of a lighting board the RAC were not giving an inch and left me with no food, drink or checking to see if I was dependant on medication as I was in the middle of nowhere in a lay-by overnight. It was a shocking situation and failing by the RAC.
Upon checking many of most of the breakdown cover policies are the same. The only one that provided Caravan breakdown was Green Flag.
I have used the caravan club Mayday (Green Flag) twice, once for when my Eribas brakes were sticking and also for my 44 year old MG. Nothing was too much trouble for them..
They couldn't fix my Eriba brakes onsite however they offered to trailer it home when my holiday had finished if I couldn't get a caravan engineer to fix it..
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
