Towing in France.

I am looking for advice from you well traveled peeps. We have been going to France for many years (camping) This year we are taking our little Erica, Triton 410 for the first time. Have been doing some research into towing mirrors. Very confusing advice from web sites as to know whether they are required by law.
I have all the other requirements and don't want to fall foul of the gendarmes.
Any advice appreciated.

It is confusing and a grey area area when discussed over here. I don't use any with my PuckL, but because my wife worries I have a set in the boot and would say I forgot to put them on if approached.
Best of luck

Good advice that to get a pair just in case! If you feel you can see enough behind you to be safe then ok but the law does say you should be able to see a certain amount of area behind you so get a pair just in case

I thought that I could see well behind my 320 but what a difference now I have aero mirrors fitted, much safer and keeps the gendarmes happy, I think if I had a pair in the boot it would be just as easy to fit them? the Gendarmes are not that daft and still charge you 90 euros

We disputed the fact we needed any for some time but upon advice, we bought a cheap pair to use in France just in case Le Flic gets a bit nosy. Try explaining that you don't need them to an occifer of the law who speaks a different language, while pulled up on the side of a windy, wet road.

However, after about half and hour or so of using them, I found that the increase in rear vision is huge irrespective of whether you officially need them or not. I've not bothered to go the whole hog and fork out for a fancy pair as the Raydot elastic backed ones I use, work fine.

Don't get magnified ones though, especially on your nearside as that becomes your offside when abroad.

Extension mirrors are a necessity in most cases. A lot of people think they don't need them because the view in their wing mirrors is nearly the same with or without the caravan. However the view in the internal rear view mirror isn't!!!!. The extended wing mirrors compensate for this and allow much more warning of vehicles overtaking. True here or in France.

Joan,
don't think about it, just buy a pair. I like many others use Milenco Aero. Get the flat lens whatever brand you buy.

Thanks for all your advice, looks like I will be taking a trip to Halfords then. What with mirrors a battery charger and a new awning this week, this caravan malarkey is a bit costly on the old purse strings. Oh well can't take it with you as they say. Happy days

We were sceptics turned to converts like Randa when we eventually put ours onto our Octavia Scout. Now we wouldn't tow our Troll without them.

They proved especially invaluable when we pulled into a narrow layby on a very busy & fast dual carriageway somewhere in the sunny south of England - I'm not sure that we could have safely and confidently pulled out into the traffic without the extra view that the mirrors gave us. MikeT

I'd take a look on FleaBay before I visited Halfords, I picked a pair of Aeros up for less than half price of new and they had hardly been used

Hi everyone, all the requirements now purchased. Another question please. Just discovered there are various charges on the peage when towing a van. On researching it appears our 2007, Triton 410 may fit under the 2metre barrier. Has anyone tried this. On our way to Norfolk once we pulled into a lay by only to be confronted by a 2metre barrier. PANIC We just cleared this by a whisker. I can't get the exact measurements as the van is in storage at present. I know the weather in the southern France is hot but I've become attached to my pop top I don't want to come back without it.

All current Eriba Tourings are 2.26m high. I believe the 2010 alterations increased the height a bit but IIRC my '01 and '05 Trolls were 2.2m high, or as near as dammit. That suggests that your Triton would be the same. Maybe your Norfolk height barrier had some tolerance built in. I certainly can't get an Eriba in my garage as the door height clearance is just 1.9m.

Hi Joan.
We did it once by mistake. On that occasion we had travelled many hundreds of miles in France without using the peage but decided to get on it at Bayonne to avoid the traffic. As soon as we entered the motorway we were confronted with a < 2000 gantry on the inside lane.

Couldn't reverse out as a queue of cars built up behind us. It was far more stressful than this account implies. No alternative other than to guage the height of the gantry with soft swinging blades against the 2.2 Metre Eriba and.........go for it. Took a ticket and paid Class 1 (car class) at the end of our motorway journey.

I definitely don't recommend it however. Go for one of the other lanes and pay the full wack.

Note: Most toll booths now are automatic so your height is automatically measured as you roll up. Use your credit card to pay. It's much easier.

Get a Sanef Tolling Liberté tag. The sensor releases the barrier and automatically charges the account linked to the tag. There are also no stopping lanes (usually on the left) which allow you through if driving under 30km ph and 10 metres apart.
