Omnistor 6200 roof mounted awning

Hi, has anyone any experience of the 6200, the one fitted to the roof above the awning rail. On my previous Troll I had one but the one fitted/clamped to the awning rail which was a real pain as it stopped a traditional awning being used. I've seen advertising about the 6200 and the rail used to attach to the roof by Omnistor and this would enable me to keep using my rail mounted awning which appeals to me. Does the support rail fix through the roof. Mine is a 2016 Troll 542. The 6200 isn't cheap and I want it to be right. I'm going to the Feb Caravanning & Camping Show and will visit stands to enquire.

Maybe Hymer should build an Eriba with a door each side. That way you can have a Fiamma/Thule on the awning rail one side and a conventional awning on the other.

I've noticed the odd van with an awning fitted on the roof during my search, mostly on Continental websites. Personally I've always shuddered at the thought and probably wouldn't buy one so equipped, which you need to factor in to your considerations as it might affect residual value.

Afternoon Colin,

I had a 6200 fitted to our new 540, which I bought from AL in September last year.
We had decided to have an Omnistor, and debated whether to have it gutter mounted or roof mounted. I looked at a couple of vans with the gutter mounted awning at the Eribafolk summer meet, and liked the fact that it's 500mm longer then the 6200, but didn't like having 3 No fixing bolts through the roof.

I spoke to John Rose at Rose Awnings in Poole, who would fit an awning to the new van at AL, prior to me picking it up. He gave me costs for the 4900 (awning rail mounted) and the 6200 (roof mounted). The 4900 was about £200 cheaper, but I preferred the roof mounted awning. This also gives me the option of using any type of awning attached to the gutter rail in the future.

When I picked the van up, Cameron at AL commented that the 6200 awning is more saleable in the pre-owned market than the 4900. I note Mr SDA's comment that he wouldn't buy a van with a roof mount awning, but this doesn't seem to be an opinion shared by one of the major Eriba dealers.

I have (hopefully) attached some photos of my awning, from the day after I bought the van.

Whatever type of Omnistor you go for, ask if you can have a short winding pole. The standard pole will reach to the awning on a massive motorhome, and does not fit in a normal Eriba locker. John Rose provided me with a short pole which is quite sufficient for the Eriba height, and stores in a locker.

Cheers Mark

Hi Mark, thank you very much for the information. The awning looks great and like you I think it's the much better option. Thanks for the heads up on the pole length too. I budgeting on around £1k with fitting. We bought out 542 from AL but live in Leics so getting the awning fitted is a challenge, I read about Rose awnings and we are going down to near Poole for 4 weeks in May/June so I'll call them and see what cost and fitting time.

Thank you.

I've been mulling over the 6200 and wonder what makes it specially suitable for mounting on the roof. By that I mean that all such awnings use adaptors to fix themselves to whatever, be it awning rail, wall, side of van etc. So would an awning that fits, say, in an awning rail be able to fit on the roof with appropriate adaptors? And if not, why not? I guess there must be an issue, otherwise Thule would just make one awning type and supply appropriate adaptors based on what it was being fixed to.

Hi all,
Like Mark, I have just had a new 6200 fitted to the roof of my Troll 530 by Rose Awnings, Poole.
John and Dan did a superb, neat job and I'm very pleased with it.
Certainly Not a cheap option, but as the saying goes, you get what you pays for!
One point to clarify, the roof mountings are bonded and the Cassette Awning is then bolted to them, so no bolts through the roof worries.

I think I'd rather have bolts than the worries that it's just held by adhesion.

It is all in the mind. Wood glue is stronger than wood, car manufacturers can glue cars together and Solvite the wall paper adhesive people had an add where they had a man pasted to a piece of paper whilst hung under a plane.
Mechanical fixings are easier to get your head around, but why put holes in and risk water ingress.

I had mine as a factory option from Hymer - interesting to note that they glue and bolt it...
