Exactly.

Indeed a couple we count as close friends met at the Hf country house on Exmoor.

They've been married about 15 years now.

Back on the trail

Some discussion on CT has clarified a caravan weight issue of which I was unaware and I thought it worth sharing.

Car manufacturers specify a maximum noseweight for their product and such a weight is borne by the car's rear axle. This much I knew already and equates to 80kg on my Yeti.

They also specify the maximum towable load and that is usually the same as the towing limit that they specify and that is the most weight that a towed van can pass through its axle. In my Yeti's case that's 1200kg.

So in essence, as long as I run with 80kg on the nose the caravan can weigh up to 1280kg and all would still be legal, as long as the car's individual axle weights and GVW/GTW aren't exceeded.

Now that get's a lot closer to the 1300kg MTPLM of a current Troll and makes the possibility of loading and being under any limits much more attainable.

What you are saying about the nosewight being added to the axle load is in line with what I have heard previously, and gives you that element of safety in your van calculations. BUT remember you should deduct the 80kg from the cars payload figure, so overal combined figures remain the same.

Of course Colin. Such a deduction has always been built into my spreadsheet.

It means you can pull a van that has a heavier MTPLM than your car's towing limit but you can't alter the MTPLM of the van.
