Hi and welcome to Eribafolk.
We have several members who now live in France so I assume, insure their Eribas out there.
However, I presume you'll be "storing" the van out there and will be living in the UK. Let's see if any of our ex pats have the solution?

Well, if you're going to keep the van in France and presumably use it here too, then youb shoukd have no problem insuring it.
First, a van here has its own Carte grise which is proof or ownership. It will have its own number plate too.
Where did you buy your van? If you bought it here, then you already have one. If not, then you have to register it at your local prefecture de police. Then, you'll have the necessary document for the insurer. We use Credit Agricole. It's much cheaper than the prices I read about in the forum.
If you need any practical help, just ask. Where will you be keeping it?

Bryn, a French caravan has its own number plate. The carte grise should already be in your name. Drom2 can you scan it and post it here so we can see? If its not then a trip to your local prefecture will do the job, where is it in Brittany? I'm between roscoff and st malo. Do you speak French? If not, i can help.

Not sure if you can if your main residence is the UK ?? When you bought it you would/should have signed a "cessation" and a copy sent to the prefecture, if you are towing with a UK registered vehicle then I would have thought a UK the car number plate would suffice for the caravan?
That makes sense Bryn as the authorities wouldn't know the caravan was a French resident and for all they knew it would've come over on the ferry behind the OP's car.

It seems that a caravan over 500kg needs a carte grise but under that, it doesn't. Under 750kg it can be on the car insurance. Over that weight it must have its own. It's a bit of a minefield. If Drom2 doesn't speak French, then I'm happy to call insurers and the prefecture to ask the question. If it has a carte grise, that would suggest that it is over 500kg so will need a number plate and the carte to be jn his name.

Thank you for the offer but I think we can manage the French. I have insured it this year with in England while we investigate what we need to do to insure in France.
