New troll 530 coming - sun canopy tips?
in Making the most of that expensive pitch Thu Mar 15, 2018 9:02 amby Nthurrzzz (deleted)
Hi,
a new troll530 is on its way and I’m interested in a simple sun canopy.
What dimensions should I be considering? What’s the optimum length for a new troll 530?
What works best for you?
Thanks

The Isabella Shadow is as simple as you can get. Lightweight, quick to set up, excellent in sun, OK in rain. You would need the 3m.
Fiamma Caravanstore is my favourite. All the above but also v good in rain. Can be left on the van (we have in 12 years of eriba ownership), problem though is it fouls the door. You can get around this, but it is a compromise. Agent Fiamma, also trading as Camperlands offer good prices.
We are now on our 4th eriba, and due to the changes in roof design I can not add the extra higher up awning track I have fitted on previous vans to get around the bag issue to my liking. I have a Fiamma on the back of the van and on the door side use either a Kampa awning for longer stays or my Isabella.
You could consider a midway option of the soon to be available Sunncamp Swift Van 260. At £85 it could be worth a go. I am considering one for wet breaks.

Although we've tried a few sun/rain canopies over the years, we find the Isabella Shadow is the easiest to fit and live with.

As Mr Motters says, it'll have to be a 3metre one for the Troll which is a tad too short but the next size up is a fraction too long. It has a 2metre projection and comes with two poles. We have purchased an aluminium washing line prop from Wilkinsons which we use as a centre pole.

By using this third pole, we can prop the middle of the canopy up in the sunshine to give extra headroom and in wet and stormy weather we drop the middle pole and adjust the guy ropes to give a centre V shape in the canopy which deals with the worst of the weather being chucked at you.
We also use 4 extra guy ropes, an additional one on each of the corner poles and one on each end of the canopy where it attaches to the van.
We've used this canopy in fair weather and foul and it has stood up to it all both in the UK and abroad.

Abusing foreign and UK chickens is a summary offence Mr Randa as is misuse of a Wilko washing line prop.
And I thought you were Roger aka 'The Isabella Shadow'.

We use a Vango sun canopy. It has performed well in sun and rain and is quick to put up and remove. One advantage is that the pole is a rounded shape along the top edge so minimal risk of it falling inwards and damaging the caravan. Different sizes are available. There is a pic. in the gallery are IMG 3567 (pg 5).

I made a version of this as per Randa's original dimensions, I bought a Coleman tent awning, cut it back and sewed on the webbing , to attach it to the slot on the side of the 'van. The front has a bendy pole that forms an arch.
For approx £60 it is very useable, the only problem is that it's only made of ripstop nylon but is very lightweight and functional.
Very similar to pictures above.

This was our first one and we replaced it with another in grey after a few years as the ripstop became unstable due to prolonged exposure to the hot sun of the Med. The grey one eventually went the same way.

I like the shape of the Vango but looks like potential pooling problems with that amount of slack material.Colin
If it reacts like the Coleman, it wobbles a bit in the slightest of breezes and sheds any puddling in the process.
