Awning rail fixings

I recently purchased a full Vandehorn awning from another member and it seem the only thing I need to do is attach a footman loop to accommodate the center bar that holds the roof up on the awning rail. I have attached a couple of images of what I mean from some pictures I found (not my Troll).

I have managed to find the correct size of footman loop on Ebay so all I need to do is attach it to the correct place on the lower part of the awning rail. My question is do I just drill a couple of small pilot holes and use self tappers to secure the loop?

I've never done it myself but I assume that you are correct. The fixing must go through the skin to the steel frame behind. Just make sure you use the right size pilot drill :)

And put some mastic in the holes to seal.

And be sure to use stainless steel self-tappers.

Mike,
make sure you buy extra screws. When fixing to the rail I have chewed up several screw heads despite careful pilot drilling. From memory you need at least 3.5 x 30, possibly 35 to ensure you get a fixing into both sides of the square steel framework behind the awning track. As mentioned above use lots of mastic, NOT silicon. Sikaflex is best but at £12 a tube expensive for the correct grade. I find a non setting roofers mastic does a good job and have used this on two of my vans.

I have one of these "footman loops" on my troll, now I know what it is for!

The loop i've ordered fits almost exactly the profile of the down pole. As the pole is aluminium it is pliable enough to knock into shape.

Hello Mike

If you find yourself short of the correct stainless raised countersunk self-tappers for this job, I've got lots of spares. You'd be more than welcome to a few FOC.

Cheers
