A sticky goo..

This morning we decided to uncover the Eriba and set about giving it a bit of a wash and brush up ready for the season.
I must admit that in places, the bright white paintwork is looking a bit tired and is worn through to small areas of bare metal on the high spots of the dimpled finish.
The paint coat is so thin that we are scared to use too much elbow grease on it so it looks like a touch up job later in the year if we can get an exact paint match.
The other thing is that whoever it was that did a splendid job of fitting new window gaskets before we bought it for we've never had any water ingress, must have used plumber's mate or something similar. Although it's been five years, the gooey grey overspill is still sticky and inevitably it's picked up lots of dirt over the years which is impossible to get off (unless you know different).
OK, so it's not visible with the windows closed but it's an embarrassment every time we open the windows to show a black meandering line of what looks likes black mastic, applied in the dark while wearing sun glasses.

Hi Rodger we uncovered ours Monday it is fine no damp ,ready to go ,see you all at Stratford
I had a similar residue problem coming from under the central aluminium trim, it was grey with a very thick sticky feel, I just rubbed my fingers across it and squeezed it into a ball, and then pulled it away! It did leave some residue but not much (this will be removed by trial & error, with white spirit, meths, or even petrol!)
I would really have to see your situation before offering advice as for a re-spray then I'd be really tempted to do something unusual but tasteful
Sorry, but apart from that I feel unsure as to what to advise
Likes to wax and have a smooth finish!
It's a conspiracy, I tell you!

Are you saying that the cover has worn the paint away?

It is such a lovely day here, we're gagging to get away - we've only got to wait till Monday when we will take our first 4 day trip away this year to Burwell in Cambridgeshire - hope the good weather lasts. Theres a nice little CL there and not expensive.
As for gooey stuff we find we get a black mastic type of leakage from our roof guttering - have noticed other Eribas have the same and that its exacerbated in hot weather. I assume this is normal and not to worry about. I occasionally clean it off with WD40. Please let me know if i'm doing wrong.

It sounds like caravan sealant which is non setting mastic and has the same consistency as chewing gum, the opening window seals are preloaded with it and it can ooze out over time, the fixed Windows tend to have a bead of it behind the rubber. My Famila has black mastic on the gutter which looks a bit blobby in places. I haven't been tempted to yank at it as it can pull out more than you bargained for.
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

As mentioned previously a bank card makes a good scraper - cut it in half and rub the cut edge on a bit of wet and dry held flat on a table top. Do it as if you were sharpening a chisel.
You'll be able to get tight to the underside of the rail with that, and white spirit on a rag will get the remnants off. It's cheaper than WD40 too.
.
Our 230GT has a little too much black mastic in places but I decided to leave it rather than risk compromising water tightness. Some years ago I fitted new seals to our then Fleurette caravan. The seals come pre-masticed and inevitably it oozed out in places. I found white spirit removed it quite nicely without damaging the seal. When set a bit more it can also be picked off and rolled into a ball without sticking to fingers. This was also demonstrated by Steve on the AL stand in Feb on a new Eriba! He reckoned that if the van was made in winter, the sealant was harder due to the cold, so in warmer weather, the pressure from the screwed on strips caused it to ooze out as it softened. The moral being buy a van built in the summer!

Well according to my dealer, Tony, you are doing wrong. It's meant to stay sticky and pliable and by doing so expands slightly to ensure a water tight seal at the roof line. Unless you stand on a set of step ladders you don't get to see it anyway so just ignore it - it's not as though it's doing any harm and in fact, it's doing a lot of good.

When I was looking at the new eribas at the nec on airstream stand. The also had an lots of grey funky stuff on the mid belt section of trim which at the time I tought was a bit of sloppy work but then understood it is better to have lots for the sealant and limit water ingress.
