winter cover off, 540 gleaming but two questions

We just took our winter cover off yesterday and it has done its business as our 540 really looks a GT. We had forgotten how exciting it is to see the Troll in all its glory again - the wee beast from the North West re-emerges!
Incidentally we had a real problem getting our SAS Wheel clamp to come off as the lock barrel seems to have rusted inside over the winter - it took a lot of WD40 and hefty thumps with a rubber mallet to loosen it, Message to myself to get some grease in it before I pack it away next time!
However I now have two daft questions to ask caused by my lack of memory, made worse by a recent prolonged intake of heavy medication. I want to flush through and sterilise the water system and I have some Milt6on solution i was thinking of using. I have a vague recollection that last spring someone advised against using Milton for some reason. Can anyone refresh my memory - why should we not use it?
The second question is last year we got a bit of mould on the canvas of the pop-top and I seem to remember some members suggesting something to use to gently remove it. Can any one kindly remind me what to use? . MikeT

"I want to flush through and sterilise the water system"
I have used Tesco own [nice and cheap] tablets instead of the Miltons for many years.I can only assume others may advise against this because of a tainting of the water taste.
At the start of the season I dissolve 8 in some warm water and pour into the tank and then continue to fill up with cold. When full I open the taps on hot and cold and prime the system. When water is running through taps fully, I top the tank up with 4 more tablets and warm water so top of tank and pump hose are in sterilized water I leave this to stand for 24/48 hrs, rinse out and leave filled with clean water for 24/48 hrs. Once drained down it is hard to detect any tainting of the water.

I add a generic baby sterilizing tab every time Yann puts water in the tank. We don't drink it, we only use it for hand and teeth washing and fruit and veggie rinsing. I have a little water fountain that sits in betty's nose for drinking water and the kettle.

Miltons fluid seems to work fine for me (needs flushing out a couple of times but one expects that) - the best alternative I've ever found is the stuff that your friendly landlord uses to flush out his beer-pipes every few days - you just need a very good relationship with your local! Don't know what it is called but it leaves no residual taste at all... and cleans the pipies lovely!

Thanks Dave. I will have to re-establish my relationship with my local landlord, although so many of ours have now shut down or become restaurants rather than pubs. MikeT

Hi Mike I used to use Milton and then changed to puriclean because it had better sterilising qualities. I couldn't remember why until I found this bit of info below on the web. Its very inexpensive and lasts for years, I have had the same small tub for 3 years.

Puriclean: This is a powder that when mixed with water will Clean AND Sterilise your water system. First though, some people advocate the use of Milton to sterilise the water system. Milton is designed as a Chlorine (Hypochlorite) Based sterilising agent, whether you use the liquid or dissolving tablets. It is good at sterilising anything that is already clean, like baby’s bottles or brewing kit. It doesn’t clean the Biofilm from the inside of pipes, when bacteria are growing in water they produce a slimy, glue like substance that they use to anchor themselves to any surface, as Bacteria reproduce (Called Binary Fission) they can produce toxins, these can also stick to the Biofilm. Milton may kill most of the bacteria, but it doesn’t remove the Biofilm where the toxins are hiding. Milton will also attack the Metal in your water system such as boilers.

Quote: Poptop320 wrote in post #8I'd second that. We use Puriclean too. It costs next to nothing and last yonks. I might have considered Milton if Mrs Pete and I were thinking about having several more babies, but we aren't.

I recently 'invested' in some Puriclean, only used it once but was attracted by the fact it is safe on stainless steel so thought it safe to use with our Truma hot water tank on our recently purchased Triton 430:

Should last yonks.

Thanks everybody - this is just what I wanted. I knew in dark corners of my failing memory that someone had made some comments about Milton. Luckily our daughter has just had another child so the Milton won't be wasted . MikeT
