Gas flow tap / regulator

Hi all,

Only had our Puck (early 90's) for a few weeks and only just tried the fridge / hob. So my first cry for help...

I cant get any gas flow to the appliances and wondered if the problem might be with the large white dial / regulator in the cupboard.
Got a new gas bottle, valve open, dial set to "f" position and red taps open, but not even a smell of gas... attached a pic.

Does anyone know if this just an on / off valve or does it regulate flow / pressure? Do i need it or could i replace with a simple valve?
Or has anyone had any issues with these not working.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks

There is usually a set of gas taps inside the caravan that need to be turned on. The ones shown are under the hob in our Triton, from top to bottom hob, heater, refrigerator.

Check that your taps are open and then you may have to wait some time with the fridge knob pressed in before the pipework is fully purged of air and it can then be lit. It can be a frustrating wait with much clicking of the igniter button.

PS No pic attached to your post. For how to do this, please see here

No idea what that is - Have you got a regulator in your gas locker like mine ?

If so I could only guess that it may be an automatic cutoff safety valve. Someone here will know what it is.

Aaron's link below shows it is a secondary gas regulator !

All the taps in my picture are open and are horizontal. It looks to me as though at least two of yours may be 'off'.

There is a copy of the 1990 owner's manual here

The section on gas installation should answer your valve questions.

Let us know when you have lift off.

What you've got there, Anthony, is a safety shut-off / secondary regulator, made by Gurtner - there should also be a primary regulator fitted at the gas cylinder end of the system.

The primary regulator drops the pressure to about 1Bar - the secondary regulator then drops the pressure to the system's working pressure, which for Propane gas could be either 37mBar, or 50mBar. Your appliances rating plates will identify their designated working pressure.

You won't know which type of secondary regulator you have as it appears to be missing its cover plate which will show its specification.

I'd advise you don't try to light any of your appliance until the system is brought up to current standards.

This can be done by removing both primary and secondary regulators and installing an appropriate bottle-top regulator suitable for the appliance ratings.

The system must be tested for tightness and correct pressure regulation after the modifications have been completed.

Also, it appears the first gas tap after the regulator has nothing connected to its outlet port, and therefore should have a stop-end fitted.

Thanks all.

Thats really useful!

Currently there is a regulator in the bottle compartment, fixed to the eriba and the old heater one is blanked off.

Did try light with all taps horizontal but nothing.

Sounds like it all needs up-dating so will look into getting that done

Many thanks

And out of interest, this is the regulator in the gas locker. 250 mbar!

What do you mean by standard 30mB regulator, Anthony?
Did you take professional advice regarding what should be fitted to bring your system up to current standards?

As your van is pre 2004 ( pre BS-EN1949) you must use a bottle-top regulator - 28mB for Butane or 37mB for Propane.

As I mentioned before, you need to check what the appliances' working pressure is, as stated on their rating plates; I have seen older appliances which require 50mB working pressure, so you can't assume 30mB is correct.

I can only re-iterate that you should take professional advice concerning your gas system.

Thanks for the advice, I have got an engineer booked to service and install, apparently it should be possible to rejet the fridge to bring it all upto spec?

If your fridge and hob are 50mB appliances it would be easier (and cheaper) to fit a 50mB bottle-top reg.

50mB Propane Regulator

Anthony, your picture shows the fridge and heater valves closed, only the cooker seems to be open.

Have a look at mine, all open. The handle should point along the pipe leading to the appliance.
