As you may know I was away for 4 days last week, while removing some things from the van and re-instating the front seats I noticed the lower table rail (the one used when making it into a bed) had pulled away from the wall.

It is only held on with 4 screws and plastic plugs which go into the 10 mm thick chipboard wall hardly enough support for a bed in my opinion.

I have refitted it with new plastic plugs for now but it will still not be strong enough to support an adult bed

So I have taken some measurements to make up a "helper" frame to go underneath the rail, I may also make one to go the other side where it balances on the folded table leg (which would have to be removable to allow access under the table.)

More to follow when I have bought some timber and been to the workshop.

All 17 stone of me has used the front bed on two 540's (an '01 and an '05) and the relevant alloy strip has always seemed rock solid. I usually travelled with the table folded as well in order to allow folding chairs across the gap between the two seats, then pillows bracing either side and stopping any seat frame from rubbing the furniture surface. If I'd known the table support was only held by screws into chipboard I think I'd have been very, very careful.

As ever, Neville, a very workmanlike job. Well done!
Can I ask one little question?
You did countersink those screws before mashing them in with that driver bit, didn't you?
Please say you did.
Please...
