I need to remove two light fittings as they have been painted and the finish is peeling. I cannot see how these are fixed.....can any one help?

Me too! Here's the state ours are in.

I fitted replacement LEDs easy enough but when I tried to remove the light bodies to clean and respray them with Humbrol silver enamel, I hit a snag. They are fixed by a couple of screws but, so far as I can recall, there are no removable electrical connections. It would be easy enough to cut the wires and fit crimp-on connectors I suppose, but is there an easier way to take them down?

Maybe JohnE can advise?

Where are the fixing screws? There appear to be holes in the bottom of the cupboard over but I don’t seem to get either a flat or Philips screwdriver to locate a fixing....

From what I remember when I removed mine, the casing clips off. If it break, don't worry - it won't make any difference to its aesthetics

When it's off, cut the wires, fit crimp bullet connectors and replace with a lamp that looks better and produces some usable light.

Perhaps something like this:

I think I got two replacement covers from Jandi and as it's heat from the bulbs that causes the finish to degrade I fitted cool running LED's so the finish should remain OK in future.

Right. Have some answers. The plastic cover is not mechanically fixed and just pops off. The two wires have bullet connectors in ducting in the cupboard over. However these would not pass through the hole in the baseplate. I removed the plastic cover by carefully dismantling the switch.....I only hope I can get it back together! The silver paint flaked off easily and I think I will leave the casing black plastic as I fear paint will not adhere to the plastic properly in the long term.

Successfully repainting plastic depends on two things really, the right preparation and the right paint for the job. There are several specialist plastic paints around, notably Plastikote.

If the surface is scrupulously clean - and in particular absolutely grease-free - and you use an appropriate plastic primer prior to the topcoat, then with a bit of care and patience (and a still day) you'll likely get a more than acceptable finish.

It's mostly in the preparation. Skimp on that and you'll never get a good result.

Whether or not it's worth all the faff is up to you.

For me not worth the faff. The black plastic finish is good and looks great. Much better than the cracked and peeling spray paint finish!
Good luck with yours....

Mine suffered heat damage from the bulb.
The plastic housing lost what elasticity it had and wouldn't clip back together and hold the joint.

I replaced with a new led fitting. Brighter and safer.

Remember that following issues with the touch [insensitive] led lights now fitted to new vans that Leisure Vehicles have sourced some nice replacement units. They normally have them on e-bay but they are not listed at present. Link below to previous post on this.

Hi JohnE

Do you have a link for that light? I was warned that buying poor quality light can cause all sorts of electrical problems.

Hi Kam

These are available through ebay and from some caravan parts suppliers.

I've fitted these in my own Eriba and when upgrading lamps for customers - the spotlight provides good reading light and the rear glow reduces harsh shadows.

Well, I spent a couple of hours faffing about with the lights this afternoon and here's the result - before and after;

Light04.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) Light05.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I used crimp-on bullet connectors (£1.30 for for five male/female pairs) and some acrylic paint (Renault Iceberg Silver) that I had lying around in the garage. (I still haven't found the Humbrol paint I bought specially for the job last October.)

The hardest bit was getting the fittings to clip back into position with that extra wiring bulk in place.

I'm pleased with the result and as I've already replaced the bulbs with LEDs, I shouldn't have to remove them again in a hurry - fingers crossed.
