Worried about towing
Hi all.
I've owned a puck for a couple of years now.
We don't get to use it very much but last outing was to a club meet, so doubtless I've met some here.
Anyway my concern relates to a change of car.
I've swapped my Rover 75 for a mitsubishi colt and I'm concerned it may not be up to the job.
I'm keen to start using the caravan again but don't want to fork out a large sum of money on a tow bar only to find the car isn't up to it.
I've no idea who to ask so perhaps someone here could advise.
Below is the information about my car.
Thanks.
Power 94 bhp
Top Speed 112 mph
Torque 125 Nm, 92 ft-lb
Automatic transmission.

The prime source of relevant info is the mandatory VIN plate on your car. It's usually on a front door frame. The largest figure will be the Gross Train Weight i.e. the maximum that the car and van combined can weigh without being illegal. The second highest figure is the Gross Vehicle Weight i.e. the most that the car can legally weigh. Take one from the other and that will almost always give you the car's Towing Limit. So as long as you stay within those figures and the van's MTPLM you are legal. The other yardstick is whether the combined weights equal more than 40PS per tonne. Under that figure you'll find towing pretty hard going.

Power is only really relevant to the power to weight ratio I mentioned in my earlier post.
Top speed is irrelevant
Torque is relevant but there is no ratio for that.
Automatic transmission can mean a reduction in towing limit, compared to a manual version of a car as some automatic gearboxes are made of plasticine, or overheat when towing.
What is more relevant is the Model Year, the fuel and the the engine size, plus the weight info from the VIN plate.

A Puck is unlikely to weigh more than 700kgs laden https://www.automotiveleisure.co.uk/erib...technical-data/
Most Colts have a towing capacity way in exces of this http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.a...shi&model1=Colt
I would have thought you would be fine with your combination but do check for your precise model of car and caravan. Car towing limit should be listed on the V5.

I try not to encourage folk to use 3rd party websites, or even manufacturer's websites for weight information as they can and do get it wrong sometimes. All the info needed is on the mandatory VIN plates on both car and caravan. It's the plated figures that the police would use in any check etc, so it makes sense to use them, so you know you comply.

I agree with you about checking plates on car and caravan rather than relying on websites, but the websites do give a useful indication.
In this case it would seem that the OP would not have any problems with that combination subject to checking and confirming.
