Question re factory-fitted wind-out awning

Took our 2013 Troll 540 to A.L. yesterday for service and whilst there, looked at the 2019 models (as one does...). Interesting to see the new factory-fitted wind-out awning as we have a Omnistor 4900 on our 540 plus the Thule G2 Residence Room, which together make a very sturdy full awning. Cameron (A.L.) tells me that the factory-fitted one is actually an Omnistor 6200 and is 3.25m long, whereas our 4900 is 3.5m. Talking to John Rose of Rose Awnings this morning about whether he could fit a 3.5m 6200, the answer was no, because it would foul the forward portion of the pop-up. Our G2 Residence Room would not fit the 6200 and he also said that whilst the newer G3 could be tailored to the 540, the rear side panel would come down over the bedroom window.

I'm not at all keen on the idea of having an awning side panel running down over a main window - there is bound to be some abrasion of the perspex during windy weather and also as we spend two months in spring and ditto in autumn in Spain, maximum ventilation is needed at times!

Would be interested to hear from people who have the factory-fitted awning and what, if any side panels they use. Thanks.

Following this one with interest as I've just ordered a G3 from Rose Awnings to fit a factory fitted 6200 Thule on a 2018 Troll 540 and none of this was mentioned...

That said, the photo suggests it may just about clear the rear window...

How would it foul the pop top? it runs parallel with-it.

Dave,
the pop top is different, in particular it's wider at the front than at the back on higher level/later vans. It curves out towards the front corners.

But if Hymer can fit [glue] one on, why cant Rose awnings?

Both Hymer & Rose fit the smaller 3.25m Thule to the Troll; the original poster wanted the longer 3.5m version so he could use his existing residence room but the longer cassette fouls the wide pop-top corner at the front of the van...

Correct! We were back in A.L. today. Unfortunately the vans are place too close together to wind-out the awning even slightly. However, using Mk1 eyeball my fears re any rear side panel coming down over the window are hopefully misplaced. A panel may just about clear the window (as per rs540's post/photo).

Interestingly a photo of the G3 Residence Room on the Thule website does show the rear panel coming down over a (non-Eriba) window.

Likewise, if you don't park it forward enough you'll have a problem with the door so mm perfect is the answer. What is the measurement between outside of door when open to outside of rear side window and how does that compare with the 3500 awning?

Presumably when fixed in the position shown in Robin's (rs540) pic, then a conventional awning will also fit in front of it? Further down the roof slope and you get a problem?

Randa - the door on our 540 can open beyond 90deg with the 4900 & G2 but to prevent it coming into contact with the front panel we had two eyes fitted (one on door, one on the body) and a length of bar with 90deg bend both ends hold the door at 90deg very nicely.

Our 4900 is mounted on a length of extrusion bonded to the roof, not with the three clips often used. However, the position of the 4900 casing would just about preclude any use of a normal awning (not that we have ever seen any need to try!).

There is another option that I came across when looking at a 6200 on a 550 and that is to use the 3.0m one which clears the side window and just clears the door but will not be able to open more than 90deg which is not a problem for you :)

As the 550 has an exhaust vent just before the wider part of the roof canopy the shorter one should be fine for you too

You can see some pics in my post here 550 Omnistor and Other Options
