Hi to all
Just like to say hi and i thought id send my fist post here. Its probably in the wrong place but i will get the hang of this eventually. First things first it nice to be able to talk freely like this without worrying whether its relevant to our fantastic Eribas or not. ( i think most of you know where im coming from )
Anyway before you all nod off with boredom im in need of a little advice regarding tyres for my puck L.
The old one are now around 4 years old and still look fantastic but its time to change them as you dont know what's going on inside What make should i go for as the last one were just normal everyday car standard types which i was not to.comfortable about.
My local tyre fitters assured me that they were fine but to me they just looked to light weight.
If anybody wants to join up with me and Cath in FForest Fields in the middle of next month give us a shout except for ELLEN as she always bring the rain ( only joking )
Take care all and nice to be involved again
JOHN

Hi John

What is it about the tyres that makes you think they need replacing?

Is it the age or that you think they aren't the right ones?

Four years is on the young side - if there's no sign of any perishing, crazing or cracking of the sidewalls and between the tread blocks I wouldn't bin them for a good while yet.

I was always told 4 years is about the tme span for caravan tyres. The condition of them are excellent visually. Do you think im being to belts and braces about this.

You may be being a bit belt and braces but there is safety in that!
Can you check the inner tyre walls for bulges and cracks etc?

A bit, but then I'm not an expert.

I'd be inclined to go with what a fitter - one whose opinion you value - says about them. He's likely to err on the cautious side in his assessment, not least because he doesn't want you beating on his door a week later and threatening to rearrange his wedding tackle after you've had a blow-out on the M5.

And a cynic might say that Mr Tyrebloke is more likely to recommend replacing them sooner rather than later anyway because he's going to get to flog you three tyres.

Assuming you're doing the spare at the same time, that is.

The advice for when to replace tyres seems to change as often as any reasonably hygienic feller changes his pants. Some - like the Caravan Club - say five years tops, but several of the tyre manufacturers say they can last up to twice as long as that provided there is no obvious deterioration or evidence of abuse or damage.

I suppose the thing to do at the end of the day is whatever makes you feel at ease, but I still think four year-old tyres in good condition are too young to throw away.

And when you do change them, get the new ones balanced.

Some people say it doesn't matter because it's a caravan and you aren't riding in it, but just because you aren't riding in it doesn't mean that it isn't shaking every nut, bolt and screw loose as you tootle along.

I'll get underneath the van tomorrow and give them the once over with my trusty bottle top glasses on so I'll miss nothing that may look alittle suspect.
I can't wait now to get going off on our holidays.

Now John, I'm sure you would prefer my company in the rain than a sunny day without me . Ellen.

Dang!
When we got our second 540 it was 7 years old and still on original rubber that looked like new, but I changed it anyway using Event Tyres. They're very good.
Thing is I chatted with Sandy of Jandi first and he suggested that I change to the same size tyre as the newer vans use. Apparently they're a fair bit stronger but with no real price difference and there's no clearance issues. Trouble is I'm blowed if I can remember the relevant sizes now. Doh!

Hi John, when you do check your tyres it is worth taking the spare out of the cradle, when I checked mine there were grooves in the sidewall caused I believe by the sideways downward pressure when stowed. If you replace all 3 I would recommend a thin piece of ply wood , laminate or similar under the spare this will stop the grooving. Hope that helps and makes sense

Sorry but all the receipts etc went with the van. Perhaps Tony can tell us the make and size of the tyres on his '13MY model?

Vanis Barum 185 R14 C on 2013 Troll
??? no profile figure on the tyre???

Apparently 'standard' profile is 80 so it may not be marked.

There isn't a profile number for that size.

It's a light commercial tyre.
