separate Green Cards for Germany ?

In the ACSI book section on Germany, it states that car & caravan must have separate green cards. This same information was in last years ACSI book too,so I don't think it is Brexit related? I contacted Saga(who insure both my car & caravan) & was told "no green cards are required until we leave the EU" so I then contacted C&CC, pointing out the statement in the ACSI book & the response from SAGA & asking for clarification. The reply made no reference to ACSI & suggested I contacted my insurer! which I did & received the same answer as before. Does anyone know if in fact the green cards are asked for on entering Germany?Any help/advice on this matter would be appreciated.Dave

Don't know about green cards, sorry but when we were hit in Germany the police who attended the accident were very confused by the fact that the Eriba had the same registration number as the car. They did accept the car insurance and caravan insurance that we had despite their confusion. Post Brexit this may become an issue as most EU countries caravans seem to have their own number, this may make caravan insurance compulsory as well. I have no proof of this, just my thoughts.

I would suspect that the ACSI book is written once and has to meet the needs of all countries where it is published, so I doubt that they would issue a separate version just for the UK (though I might be wrong). Definitely, green cards will be required after Brexit and you will require one for the tow unit and another for the trailer whether it be a caravan or other form of trailed unit.
Our Insurer issued us two green cards without hesitation when I required about it, but then we were expecting to be out of the EU by now. We have never had to have them before, standard UK insurance was good enough as long as it covered European travel, and now, of course, all those green cards that have been issued are irrelevant (until we actually leave).

Thanks for that. When we first ventured abroad with a caravan in 1970 ,green cards were all the rage but after joining EU they all but disappeared.I was just concerned about the ACSI book entry but if Saga refuse to give green cards then we have to go without the no probs.dave

Hi rutts, I renewed my car insurance with Saga last week and asked for and got separate car and caravan green cards by return of post (for Spain and France) . Hopefully not necessary but as we will be away in June it seemed prudent to ask for them whilst I was negotiating for a discount.
So I would ask them again quoting the UK government advice website rather than ACSI
Cheers, Tom

You don't need green cards or IDP unless UK exits EU without a deal 31 October 2019. If we exit with a deal beforehand then the same rules apply until 2020.
