Thule 6200 and 6300

When we tried out our new 6200 Thule canopy with residence room it rained heavily and pooled on the roof. The usual advice is to tip the canopy on one side to allow water to run off. However, the sides of the residence room are connected by two lengths of figure of eight rigid plastic strips which won’t bend. We unzipped the sides of the windows and removed the lower plastic strip. We could lower one side of the roof but then had a draughty open corner.
So question 1: Has anyone else with a 6200, and residence room, had the same problem and found a good solution, please?
We didn’t know about the 6300 until recently and now note that among other improvements it is advertised as having ‘a front rail drainage system for secure water evacuation’.
And question 2 is: Can anyone who has a Thule 6300 please tell me if this really copes with taking rain away and solves the problem of waking up in the night to find a dangerously sagging roof.
Many thanks for helpful advice.

Presumably "two lengths of figure of eight rigid plastic strips which won’t bend." refers to the joint between side panel and front panel. On our 4900/G2 Residence Room (which we have had for six years) I shortened one of plastic strips to allow that corner to be lowered sufficiently to encourage drainage. I also use a centre rafter (not the standard Thule Omnistor one, as that pushes the canopy material up and if left in place during sunny weather would stretch the material). What I use is a sprung-loaded round pole (originally came with a Lillypad Leaisure Windblocker). This prevents sagging whilst not putting upward pressure on the canopy and can be left in place - saves forever guessing what the weather is going to do! In six years of use the G2 has withstood quite a few severe (Spanish) thunderstorms & torrential downpours without problem.

Thank you very much for your reply. Useful advice which we will have to try next time we are out and about. (Interesting about the central rafter - we have the standard Thule one).

Magpie - which Eriba do you have? On the 530/540 with 6200/6300 the G3 rear panel upright would seem to come down over the rear window but hopefully clears the external hatch.

As previous thread 6300 x 3.5m cut, clears the rear window (540)

Yes, I know. However, John Rose will no longer undertake cutting a 3.50m down to 3.4m due to workload and concerns regarding provision of warranty.

We have the 3.25. Yes it does clear the external hatch and yes it does come down over the window. But we can live with that - don't open that window much when we are using an awning.

Thanks - good to have first-hand confirmation that it clears the hatch. Looking forward collecting our new 540/6300/G3 later this month.

What it doesn't clear is the outside TV/electric point which was factory installed immediately to the left of the hatch. Even if we could have had a longer cassette it still wouldn't clear the socket. But that's another problem entirely. We just won't use it with the residence room (although it will be useful at other times) and will either pop an extension lead out of the 'kitchen' window or have a two way splitter arrangement on the EHU lead - still working on that one.

Have fun with the new van.

That is interesting. On our 2013 540 the external mains socket (no TV point needed nor specified as we never take one) is in between the entrance door and the wheel arch and I assumed it would be the same on our new 540. Will have to give Cameron a ring on Monday!

PS - I noticed a 2018 535 on the dockside at Bilbao a few days ago whilst we were waiting to board. That had an external outlet cover (not sure what) to the left of the hatch and I assumed that was related to the different internal layout.

Curses - have just spoken with Cameron and he confirmed that the external mains socket on our new 540 is indeed positioned to the rear of the hatch :(
Ah, well...

Reference the rear upright of the G3 when fitted to the 6300 canopy on a 540, as posted in a different section John Rose & his son Daniel came along to the CClub site at Hunters Moon (Wareham) to deliver our new G3 Residence Room, just after we had collected our new 540 from A.L. Not only did they deliver it - they also put it up (well, apart from the pegging out)! In doing so, John arranged the rear upright to just clear the flap of the mains socket. He did this by positioning both sealing flaps to the rear (rather than the normal way of having them splayed-out. That night we had heavy rain (the only rain in the sixteen nights we were there!) and there was no water ingress problem. Still can't open the window but we can live with that.

Didn't think at the time to photograph the interior - doh! Anyway, the 540 + 6300 + G3 make a handsome combination :)

Keith
you are making me re-assess my opinions on Safari rooms/residences attached to wind-outs. Since the idea of fixing the canopy body on the roof it looks like you have sufficient fall on the roof. I know the seal on the corners is not the best, but it would look like that against the van looks fine.
After popping into a couple of Trolls at the summer meet I think the interior space for two would be big enough not to need a full size blow up or frame awning. So if I was made to buy a troll in a few years time I'd have to give this idea some consideration.
One question though, does the leading edge of the canopy frame have an awing rail groove so that you could put a lightweight shade on the front if you wanted?

I have the 6200 and there is no front facing awning rail, only the one behind the fascia for the front wall of the room which I agree, is a shame...
