Split overhead locker frame / hinge mount repairs

Has anyone had a split or failed overhead locker hinge mounting repaired with a 2mm thick aluminium strip glued to the frame?
If so, did you have trouble with the door catch whacking into the top of the frame rather than engaging with the the latch?

Ours (2015 - Triton 420) has this presumably fitted by AL before we bought it. No problems with our catches. Does the catch fitting have oval mounting holes. If so should be just a case of loosening and relocating the fitting if there is enough movement. Are the screws shown for the hinges. These seem a bit large and not very straight which could cause the door to be higher in the frame than needed. You could also consider grinding the top of the catch down a little until it misses the frame.

we had an overhead looker that kept coming open when traveling, eventually the wood split where the screws fit. This was filled with a good quality wood glue clamped tight and left for a day to dry. whilst looking for a cause of the problem i found the wooden rail that the hinges screw into was loose. there are scewa in the inside corners of the cupboards that hold the frame work to together. After tightening all the screws in each cupboard tight the hold lot has held better and we no longer have cupboards coming open when traveling.
looking at your problem it seem looking at those large screws that may be the issue.

Our 2013 540 (recently part-exd for a new 540) had the repair/modification carried out by A.L. No problems with opening or closing the lockers, nor any further problems with the hinges or attachments.

Interesting - the screws are per AL, the wonky angles courtesy of Hymer. Once a hinge is fitted they are not a problem - the bits that stick up just gouge a little notch in the bottom of the door
I wonder, if it is not too much trouble, whether you'd be able to post a pic of a door in the almost closed position as I have, showing the catch just before the door closes please?
My issue is causing much puzzlement during current repairs but I have no reference point other than what has been done to my van so far - 10/12 doors split - warranty repair so no way am I messing with an angle grinder to put it right.....

Here are a couple of pictures of ours (2015 Triton). I don't think they will help you though. The catches do contact the frame on some of the lockers but not all. However our catches are plastic, and the frame is also plastic so they just seem to slide over the frame onto the retaining clip (also plastic) without damaging the frame.
Looking at yours the frame appears to be wood laminate with veneer finish, and the catches metal.

On thought may be to put something temporarily between the catch and it's mounting (like a slice of plastic bottle) so the catch is slightly opened until it clears the frame. Then see if it fully catches on the retainer. Only guessing here as the design of the catch is different to the newer type ones.

That's a great help - thanks for taking the time. I hadn't realised they had changed the catch design - that may explain why they're puzzled about my concerns.
The attached shows the rim of a cupboard after the door has closed half a dozen times. At that rate it won't take long to eat through the compressed cardboard and paper - sorry, cupboard frame

The only other suggestion I can think of is, to rub a little wood stain on the mark from time to time. Eventually there should be enough clearance albeit with a small dent which hopefully can be disguised with the stain.
One tip, put a bit of masking tape on the frame and put the stain on that to test the colour. you should be able to come up with a reasonable match though it may take a few goes. then save the right mixture for future use.

Two points,
- if the screw heads are still proud in the hinge and at a slight angle, touching the edge of the locker flaps, then they are "hinge bound". This would result in them pushing the locker/flap away from them and forcing the opposite edge up to far and so hit the catch. This is obviously exaggerated by the thickness of the aluminium trim reducing the door/flap space. Removing one screw at a time and countersinking the holes slightly may help. I did this on every one of the screws that go into locker flap, not frame, replacing them with longer screws glued into place. This was after I'd had three of the flaps replaced under warranty.
- you could try shoe polish instead of wood stain to camouflage the marks. You are more likely to have this, the colour is less intense so you can build up colour depth in several applications to hopefully a good match and you can buff the area to blend in your efforts.

I had one the locker doors on our 2016 420gt drop open and split the wood by the hinge, I repaired it then looked to prevent further problem, I noticed one locker had a plastic check strap preventing the door to fall all the way open, I contacted AL and found these straps were available in packs of 10, I ordered and fitted them with no further problems.

Had the same problem recently. Are these straps still available from AL?

Thanks. Unfortunately there's no instructions or photo of how they are fitted. Would you need two per locker (i.e. one per hinge)?
