Hymer pop-up insulation option

Hymer are now offering a 'pop-up' roof insulation option/accessory. We are thinking of having this fitted when our 550GT has its next service.

Just wondered if anyone had this accessory and what they thought of it. We go away a lot in the winter and thought it might help with the heating!

Hi Harvey and welcome to Eribafolk.

As you already know Pop320 has developed one which seems to work fine on his Familia g25p1950-Poptop-blind.html but I understand it has not been quite as successful on bigger Eriba Touring Models?

The Pop Up roof insulation option that Hymer are offering has been around for about two or three years now and while I've not read of anyone on Eribafolk owning and using one, I have read of a few Eriba owners off the German Eriba facebook Group using them.

Unfortunately, because it's Facebook I've not been able to find it on the search engine.

There is one lady on Eribafolk Facebook however who in 2017, rather than pay out the huge cost of a Hymer one, made one for £20. Lesley Scott used "Quilted fabric backed by stiff lining and a few strips of plastic garment bones, all bought off Ebay".

Here's a photo she added. Lesley Scott.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I bought a roll of the silver foiled bubble wrap that is sold to go behind radiators for it insulation. It was easy to cut down its length to be a fraction wider than the width of the pop top. It stands just inside the lower edge of the roof trim and hams itself up against the roof. It’s cheap and efficient.

On the long unsupported section I have a piece of insulation pipe with a small piece on the top. The small foot on the top gives it extra grip on the roof and stops it been flicked off in high winds

I've just put the question to the German Forum on Facebook and have only had one response regarding the use of the Hymer Insulation package so far. Many other responses about DIY ones.

The guy who does use the Hymer one says he wouldn't do without it and it saves a lot on gas too. There'll probably be more replies shortly.

I have only just seen this thread.

we bought the Hymer insulation last year and have been very pleased with it.
The clips that you screw to the roof make it easy to attach and it seems pretty stable in windy weather.

I know the DIY versions are a lot cheaper but the Hymer one does fold easliy and neatly, we were in Hampshire last week and didn't need it, it sat folded under a seat for the week and would have taken only a short while to put up.

We used it on our autumn trip last year and again in March in Yorkshire and we think we were able to keep the van warmer much more easily. We only use a low wattage electric heater and had no need of anything else.

It is also quite nice to have a darker interior in the mornings - it hepls us have a lay in!!

I would certainly have the official Eriba poptop insulation if it was a bit cheaper than the 229.00 euros, the extra insulation does make a big difference. Clive has the official one and gives it a big thumbs up.
I have found these benefits which makes it worthwhile to have either the DIY/Hymer.

1. It keeps the early morning light out for a lie in.
2. In cold weather it keeps the heat in
3. In hot weather it reduces the sun getting through the canvas keeping it cooler (foil version reflects)
4. slightly better sound proofing, I would imagine the Eriba version is even better.

I currently do about 30 days a year in the Eriba due to work, if I did more it would justify buying the Hymer official poptop blind in my opinion. 😊

Yes we have one in our Triton 420GT really pleased with extra warmth, sound proofing & light elimination. Easy to install, folds flat. Should be a standard in vans.

Just popped out to my Triton and lifted the roof to check fitting a 5mm foil backed foam left over from a floor underlay job.
I started to wonder when and why I would use it. So, at night, to keep the heat in and keep it dark in the morning. Downside, it would block the triangular vents for ventilation. How about just dropping the roof at night? Exactly the same effect.

So, when would you use this form of insulation when dropping the roof didn't have the same effect?
I'm over 6 foot tall so might have to scrape my head for a night time visit to the toilet, anything else before I start cutting bits off my roll of floor insulation?

If it's just for night time you can drop the roof. If you do winter camping you may want to keep the heat in during the day.

You can still open the vents in summer time with the foil wrap in place, the insulation isn't an air tight fit. Dropping the poptop usually stimulates debate. I will post the Hymer recommendation from the manual.

Just finished my version of insulation for our pop top. Although the foil/bubble wrap would probably do, I couldn't see it lasting that long particularly when feeding it around the washroom. So I have used up some faux suede fabric which I had from a previous unfulfilled project to make a more substantial backing for the foil.

I have gone for 4 identical panels to make it easier to fit. The ends stick together with velcro and at each join, added a velcro tab, which sticks to a velcro dot stuck to the ceiling panel which holds the whole thing in place nicely. The panels fold up neatly into a small pouch.

It can be used either way round so the foil could reflect the summer heat (assuming we get any). Just to be sure I left some of the fabric on a white wet cloth for a couple of days to make sure it wouldn't stain the pop top canvas if it got wet.
