Be careful with magic erasers

These things here.

They are a whiz at getting sinks clean and removing lots of other stubborn stains, but they work so well because melamine foam is really quite abrasive.

It's like using fine wet and dry sandpaper, so if you were thinking about using a magic sponge for getting rid of black gutter streaks, I'd be inclined not to.

The body paintwork on these vans is absurdly thin - much, much thinner than car paintwork, for example, and there's no protective lacquer coat on it either. It takes next to nothing to wear it away.

And if you're ever tempted in desperation to try cellulose thinners to remove some particularly horrible residue that nothing else will shift, don't.

Before you can say Jack Robinson that shiny white paint will be on your rag instead of on the caravan, and you'll be staring at a patch of shiny aluminium instead...

Thankfully not

I saw somewhere else - no names, no pack drill - that someone else recommended using the sponges for black streaks.

They will get rid of them, but they aren't as harmless as they look.

baby oil was suggested somewhere,
perhaps that was an airstream black streak trick.

Yes - you are totally correct Pepe

Over zealous use of these 'magic erasers' will result in a (lovely ?) polished aluminium finish to your van Unless of course you plan to do the whole van in "Airstream" fashion !

As mentioned, the paint is extremely thin, it will seem to be OK as you use it, but suddenly you'll end up cutting through it

So I think the moral is: use them if you must - BUT sparingly please I often use them on plastic parts etc, but will stick to proprietary "Black Streak Remover"

I would also agree that 'cellulose thinners' are a NO NO ! I have tried Industrial Alcohol , but over use of this can remove the thin paint in time if rubbed in with too much pressure ! (yes I can prove this to my cost !)
