2 green cards - one for the car one for the Eriba

HI,

I've been in touch with my car insurance DirectLine to arrange 2 green cards - one for the car one for the Eriba. They refuse to issue one for a caravan. I believe legally they should, but they are adamant.

Any experiences with DirectLine and other car insurance companies?

There's a lot of information about Green Cards on the forum. Just put "Green Card" into the search engine. This one is an interesting link:- Going to Europe? Two Green Cards Required!
and I seem to remember that although I had one green card with both A(car) and F(caravan) on one green card (which is in fact a green A 4 sheet of paper) I endeavoured to get an additional seperate one for the car and the van.

It took many frustrating days but eventually the car insurers sent me them but the caravan one didn't arrive in time.

However, we crossed many borders including Greece to Turkey and Turkey to Bulgaria and there was no objection to the one green card with A and F on it.

Just for information.
I have just renewed my car insurance with LV and while I was doing so I asked them if they could issue green cards for car and caravan. After giving them my Triton details both green cards arrived within the week ( they have to be posted rather than email).

It was LV that was giving me problems Bob but it was at the time when nobody had a clue what was going on. They eventually twigged but the two cards arrived too late. It was them that initially gave me the one card with A and F ticked on it which worked without any problems.

~N,
I am surprised Direct Line are so confused. When I insured the car with them the policy had on it's reverse wording to cover Green card requirement, so nothing extra needed for car or van.

If I've read things correctly, then THIS year and thereafter, when we are away in France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands etc I leave my euro style number plates with GB and euro stars on the car and van, BUT put an oval GB sticker on back of car and van.

As regards Green Cards, THIS year it is dependent upon who you are with for car for your car insurance as to whether 2 x Green cards or not dependent upon the policy wording.

As regards Green Cards, AFTER this year, if NO deal has been done we will then be past the transition period and your car insurance provider will need to provide 2 x Green cards.

Why does anybody need a green card right now anyway? - surely were in the Brexit transition period so business as usual until 31/12/20. On that note, my insurance company 1st Central messaged me a couple of days ago regarding green cards - giving me details of how to get them, what for, etc, etc. I think they are only needed in a No Deal scenario - Which hasn't happened yet. I guess everybodies a bit up in the air about this brexit lark.

They definitely have to give you a green card for your caravan - with code F on it. I went thru this scenario with my insurer 1st Central last year - before the old 31st of October 19 no deal deadline. It took me 6 weeks to convince them btw. I can post a pic of my old caravan green card if you wish. Something to show your insurer. I remember Randa France on here having one that covered both.

Be warned. You may need to read the small print on your insurance policy or contact your insurance company for clarification of your policy if travelling abroad.
When you go "fully comp" it does not automatically mean you have this level of cover when abroad. You will have at least the minimum legal level of cover required for the countries you visit, which might only be "third party fire and theft" and not the fully comp you have at home. The Green Card is proof that the insurance level of cover is "Fully Comprehensive" Since I started going abroad in about 2000 this has been the case and not just a new Brexit issue. It has however been agrivated by this matter.
When I have insured the car I always ask if full European cover at fully comp is included. If the company says no I go elsewhere, as this top up can easily cost £100+. However some of the companies who do not include it as standard might issue you with it for an administration fee only.
In the past, because they include this "fully comp" level of cover as standard and issue wording in the policy document I have used Direct Line, Tesco, Caravan Club and currently Sainsburys. I believe Norwich Union also include it as standard.

DirectLine were happy to issue me a green for the car but absolutely refused to cover the caravan unless I insure with them. I found this odd and challenged them, but that’s what they said.

Although not strictly a legal requirement while we are in the EU, when driving abroad it has always been recommended that you hold a green card. This advice is from the Association of British Insurers. I guess they must have data behind it to back that recommendation up. So it’s a personal choice at this stage.

It is correct that although UK leaves end of January 2020, the transition period will continue to end Dec which means it’s pretty much as things currently stand. However there is a lot of confusion around this and it’s advised to cover all bases as you don’t want to be in a rural part of Europe arguing with local police on the fine print of the European Union transition period.

My query was about experiences with insurance companies rather than the question over legal necessity to have a green card.

You need to push Direct Line on this. If they are issuing a Green Card for the Car then they must also issue one for the car.
Put to them the scenario that the van whilst attached to the car and being towed hits another vehicle. The other party would claim off your car insurance. I think it's called third party liability.
