Towing with a PHEV car
Towing with a PHEV car

Hi,
I had a test drive of the new Ford Kuga Hybrid yesterday and wondered if any Eriba owner have towing experience with a PHEV car, the Kuga has a 2.5 litre petrol engine and an electric motor that has a range of 30 to 35 miles, this is enough to get me to work and back for normal everyday running but I’m not sure about towing with it.
The Kuga has a maximum towing weight of 1200 kg so would be ok with my Triton 420GT and the petrol engine produces 225 hp.
Just wondering peoples thoughts on this subject as this seems to be the way manufacturers are going.

My Triton is a 1300kg weight but that is the maximum weight, it doesn’t mean I travel with that amount, the reason the Kuga has a maximum of 1200kg is because of the energy it produces when braking which increases considerably when towing, the Kuga is 225hp so will tow the Triton quite easily

Steve, you may need to seek advice on your situation. The car has a max permitted gross weight and this cannot be exceeded. You are theoretically doing so as 1200kg is your max tow weight and your van is rated to 1300kg, even though it is not loaded to this weight, and this is what matters in law.

The new Kuga hybrid does seem to break the mould by offering a reasonable towing weight (1200Kg). Most can only do 750Kg. The 2.5 L petrol engine should manage ok with 225Hp and a good towball limit as well. Our Kuga 2.0 diesel 150Hp is fine with our Triton 420. Even the price seems fairly reasonable compared the previous models with fairly modest specs. However, as Colin says, you mustn't have a caravan with a plated weight more than the vehicle's max towing weight so you will probably need to look elsewhere. Is it an option to have your Eriba re-plated to 1200Kg ? Maybe worth checking with dealer. Mine is plated at 1200Kg.

In the UK: "Where the sum of the maximum plated weights of the towing vehicle and of the trailer added together exceed the plated GCW of the towing vehicle, this is not a problem as long as the ‘actual’ weights of the vehicle and trailer (which may not be fully laden at the time) do not exceed the plated GCW."

So replating may not be necessary in this case, although it might be prudent to avoid the need for a tedious roadside discussion.
