Hi All

Being a Newbie and having bought the Eriba 540 late Feb this year! Yes, I know what great timing!!! well just been to check up on the battery and it's flat and I can't move it out of the very tight space in the storage compound!!.
So I've disconnected it and bought it home. only to find its at 5 Volts. Normally this would be the death knell for a battery. BUT its an AGM so I understand that these can be brought back from the grave....
The cost of these batteries somewhat surprised me :( so I thought it might be worth a try. But then the cost of these special chargers are not cheap either!!!

So should I bite the bullet and buy a new battery or give it a go with a new charger!!

Do people take their batteries home over winter and keep them on trickle charge?

Darryl

Darryl,
I'm not sure if it can be pulled back from such a low voltage, but I do know the intelligent chargers are good. CTEK seem to be the default setting and are infact standard equipment rebadged for many top motoring marques.
Plymouth batteries are very good on price for them along with batteries if you need one.

I understand that the new chargers such as the NOCO genius 5 can resurrect one with a voltage as low as 1 volt..... they also have a battery desulfator program within the charger....
I have no experience with these whatsoever, just what I've read on the internet. In fact only just found out what an AGM battery is!

My Ctek wouldn't touch a very flat battery, just wouldn't recoginise it. I also had a "dumb" charger which I put on. This put enough charge in to the battery for the Ctek to recognise it.

I left the Ctek conditioning for several days and the battery settled out at 12.7V.....fully charged.

Brilliant, I thought I had got away with it. Went off grid for a 4 day trip and the battery ran out of puff on the first night. Although it showed a healthy 12.7V it had lost most of its capacity.

New AGM 100Ah fitted.

I need a charger in any event. Do you remove your battery over winter?

My van has been left hooked up to the mains since bought. It is garage stored and pluged into the mains when not in use. When towed it is obviously being charged and when on-site I always use electric hook-up.
If I did not have the ability to hook-up then I would remove the van and leave it on an intelligent charger.

Talking of battery chargers, Lidl currently have a few to chose from (pun intended).

I didn't reserch any further but there were some fairly large ones there that had a choice of functions. We bought a £13 Smart charger from them several years ago and it's still going strong.

Why on earth would Eriba state that the battery should not be removed?

How are you supposed to service it if required or replace when faulty.

Somebody please explain the logic to me.

The Eriba manual for my 2007 Triton states the opposite in that the living area battery should always be removed from the caravan when charging it using an external charger.

The manual further states that if the caravan is laid up for a long time in winter, remove the living area battery and store in a frost protected room so that it will not freeze and be destroyed.

darryl,
is your manual perhaps referring to an alarm system or tracker? That would make more sense.

Apparently a fully charged lead-acid battery will freeze at -62°C but if fully discharged it will freeze (and more than likely crack the case) at only -7°C.
