Problem with residence room and external electric socket.

We have a Thule residence room, which although overall much heavier than expected, makes up into a comfortably sized awning. Unfortunately, the back pole at the rear end completely blocks the outside electrical socket which Hymer put in just to the left of the external locker door. This means that when the awning is in use you cannot use the outside electric/TV socket - which we had put on so we had an electric supply in the awning! Does anyone else have this problem and, if so, is there any solution? (Apart from feeding cables out from inside the van or changing the awning!)

You do not say which model you have. The easiest option would be to fit a socket inside the rear locker hatch under the bed/dinnette seating.
If you ordered the awning and socket as a factory fit on a new van then I would be asking, sorry, telling your dealer you expected a refund on the socket cost as it is not useable.

Thanks. The extra socket inside the locker might be a good idea. Unfortunately we can't blame the dealer as we bought the van (with the socket) some time before we bought the residence room. (We didn't realise there was a problem until it was too late - have had both for some time now). The van is a 540.

I don't know how practical you are, but to fit a socket to the under bed area is very easy.
In the bottom of the undersink cupboard undo the screws holding the short vertical panel and horizontal panel that sits ontop of it tha lie on the floor. For memory there are a few dowels also lining them up but these are not glued into place, they are purely there for allignment. Underneath you will find your 230 volt wiring. Cut into this and fit a junction box as you would if fitting a spur to a domestic wiring circuit. From this feed a length of 1.5mm [rated at 15 amps / up to 3600 Watts] or heavier 3 core flex through to under the bed and wire it into a single domestic socket.

Thank you, Colin. I'm afraid we are the world's worst when it comes to fitting electrical stuff and don't have a clue! However, we are about to book a service with our local mobile man and will ask him if he can fit one for us. (He does fit solar panels and stuff so he should be able to manage an extra socket).

I have the same problem with my Bologna

So when using the Bologna I use the following and run it directly into the awning.

The outlet sockets clip nicely onto the Outwell kitchen unit. allowing the Dometic cool box Remoska and coffee machine to be used in the awning.

Thank you. We actually have that set up and it's fine when we are on an EHU. But we want to go off grid and use a solar panel - and the only 12v socket is in the multi use outlet that gets blocked by the pole. The answer of course is to use the solar panel and just the canopy when the sun is shining and the residence room and the splitter with the plugs box on trips when it's colder! Simples!

Hi Jennie, or is it Bob? Just for interested onlookers is this what a multi use outlet looks like?

Can't for the life of me see why they fitted the outlet low down next to the rear locker. I've fitted these to Eribas and the best place for a 540 is adjacent to the fridge vents where it's accessible (and reasonably easy to install 230V, 12V and aerial cables)

It would be better to move the thing but you'd need either a blanking panel or use the existing location for something else, eg if your 540 has a mover an isolation switch housing could go there.

No we couldn't understand it either. We thought it was going to be where your picture shows one. But it was factory fitted and arrived like that. Having waited so long we didn't feel like sending the van back. Actually we were expecting it to be just a 3 pin plug socket. We have found the TV inlets useful and now we are experimenting with a solar panel the Hella 12v socket will be useful too! I don't think we'll bother moving it - don't want any more holes in the van!

And (Oh no!!) reading though the thread about the Thule 6200 v the 6300 which popped up again today I quote from KeithDM: 'John (of Rose awnings) arranged the rear upright to just clear the flap of the mains socket. He did this by positioning both sealing flaps to the rear (rather than the normal way of having them splayed-out. That night we had heavy rain (the only rain in the sixteen nights we were there!) and there was no water ingress problem. Still can't open the window but we can live with that. So....since starting this thread I think I've gone in a circle!!! We have yet to try this remedy. I wonder, KeithDM, did it continue to work?

I fitted a ordinary outdoor socket underneath the Eriba to the floor, sealed it well, and ran the lead on a plug so that we plug it in inside the van?
