leisure battery charging or not from car engine

Hi
I have recently bought a 310 familia with motor mover.

there is a leisure battery under the bed which is new.
The power control unit is a csv300.

From reading the manual it is not clear if this battery should be charged from the towing vehicle alternator when hooked up to the car.
On checking with a meter the voltage is around 12.5 with or without the engine running.
The sales man when I bought it said the battery was just for the motor mover.

There is no power anywhere unless i am connected to ehu or the car.
Do i need to buy a battery charger for the leisure battery?
Help please.

If your van was originally an import it will probably not have had a battery and the associated charging bits For most UK vans this is the opposite. The csv300 is I believe a factory fit piece so in theory things should work, although I'm guessing here as some photos of you showing all that is there would help.
You then go on to say that "The sales man when I bought it said the battery was just for the motor mover." which implies the battery was fitted later and will only be charged when on mains.
The problem could also lie in your cars wiring. VAG in particular are not good. The 13 pin electrics you get off them does not always include battery charging and power to fridge. Also some previous owners of cars have decided not to pay the extra for this fully functioning 13 pin electrics.

If you do take some photos of the vans electrics then somebody out there good on electrics may be able to eliminate some factors, so that is your best move for the present.

Hi Stuart

The Schaudt CSV300 is a simple 230V ac to 12V dc power supply and does not incorporate any battery charging function from mains hook-up or from the towcar.

I had this unit on my Eriba Feeling which I imported from the Netherlands, and I subsequently purchased and installed the CSV409, purchased directly from Schaudt, Germany.

The CSV409 supports both charging functions; Hymer fit this unit on all current Eriba models supplied with the Autonomy Pack.

Your idea of installing a separate battery charger is feasible, but would require quite a lot of rejigging of your current setup and I doubt it would be cost effective.

thanks for your help.
I think the way forward is to charge the leisure battery from the house mains after disconnecting it from the leads.

or maybe connect the ehu to the house mains and plug the charger in to the caravan 240v socket outlet. seems a bit weird though.

any thoughts anyone

Mine is attached to the mains at all times, but this is easy for me as the van is garage stored at home. This means the battery should always be fully charged and I can turn the fridge on the day before leaving for a trip to get it cold and stocked up.
This 2nd point should be of use to you as if the car is not powering the fridge then atleast it will be cold before you set out and if packed with a couple of frozen water bottles or ice packs keep stuff fresh when travelling.

Yes, you can charge your battery using your separate charger either from a house socket or from a 230V socket in the caravan (with mains hook-up connected).

What you can't do is charge the battery from the CSV300 as it is not a charger.

That's what we do as the built-in charger is not working
