Gas Locker Door Corrosion

Hi Mat. The Furry strip is called "wool pile" so if you look it up on the internet it'll show pics of what it looks like behind the fur.
It should slide out of a convenient break in the aluminium channel that houses it but I'm not sure whether that's available on the Eriba.

Thanks for the info Randa - Just found the break - looks like I'm making a new door given the amount of rot I'm finding. There's almost no sealant around the frames and certainly none actually bonded to the skin. Mines a 2015 - I thought they were OK for the gas locker doors!
If anyone has any advise on how to remove the frame from the metal/poly/ply sandwich that would be much appreciated too. I'm really hoping to reuse the outer skin as mine's a hammered finish.....

That is obscene. After having had a good cry, I think I'd try and find one from a caravan breaker. If it was not a colour match I'd then vinyl wrap the door and possibly the stone guard panels to match.

Our Facebook Group member Tim Lewy did a great job on his locker door. I think it was a bit older than yours. You need to join the Eriba Folk group to see it though.

Mat, following the link Steve has given above, It looks like the frame is screwed into the thickness of the door by the screws, now probably very rusty, to be found under the wool pile.
Don't know if you can see anything via the link if you're not a Facebook user (or a Facebook Eribafolk member for that matter) but this is the picture (one of several) and the comment Tim Lewy provided.
Quote:- Finally got round to sorting the gas locker. A bit trickier than anticipated.
Took it all apart by prying out the brush seal then gentling unscrewing the rusty fixings. Stripped the paint with a chemical remover, which took a couple of coats. There seemed to be a clear coat under the paint, which might have been the original finish.
Removed the corrosion with a nylon filament brush and a powerfile on the edges and frame. This left quite a noticeable swirling on the front, which I don't think was really avoidable. I then made it presentable with two coats of Owatrol GLV, which is marine anti corrosion paint that goes on like liquid aluminium. That made it look good, but it's very easily scratched, so I finished with two coats of Oxid Vernis lacquer, which is a super hard wearing metal coating. Only needed a tester pot of each, as they go for miles.
It's being a bit stiff to shut now, but hopefully that will settle. The opening has these funny little plastic spacers rivetted in, which interfere with the brush seal.

Absolutely no joy finding any replacement, hammered or otherwise, I've tried everyone I can find. I'm starting to wonder about a remedial repair with what I have, possibly injecting wood hardener (although I'm not sure how the poly centre will react at the moment). Also, I thought that the outer skin was a thin sheet of aluminium but given that the water damage has permeated into the paint presumably it can't be?
Thanks for the facebook tip. I don't do facebook etc but I'll have a look.

Hi Randa
You got there before I posted so thanks very much for that, much appreciated.
I've managed to get the rusted screws out but presumably there's plenty of mastic stopping the frames coming apart. Just a shame there isn't sufficient to stop the water ingress!

That is a crazy price.
It does look like some newer vans are starting to suffer this problem then.
Regarding removing tye frame, it is just very carefully prizing it around the perimeter. I had the advantage that the outer skin was scrap but it did eventually come away.
I do now have a spare locker door in the loft if I ever need to replace again.
