Jacks (not of all trades)

Hi,
I’m sure I saw a photo of a square jacking point on a thread a while ago.
I’m just wondering if anyone uses a blistering-style jack (old vdub style.) I’ve bought a Russian version since it was cheap on eBay, but haven’t got our Troll yet, so can’t try it. It has a square ‘tongue’ which hinges up to insert into the jacking point.
The Russian (USSR!) model has a base which is circular with pressed steel spikes, but I’m thinking of welding a cross-piece if it works ok, to give a bit more stability.
Does anyone know if this style fits, or is the square box-section too far back to work?

Hi Steve,
the jack you refer to has also been sold as a Mexico and Brazil jack. JustKampers sell it here https://www.justkampers.com/7x0-011-031-...zilian-bay.html
The jacking point on the pre 2010 Eriba's was not designed as such. The square hole was used during manufacture to spin the body. It can and has been used by many, but ONLY in an emergency. I carried such a jack on previous vans when on the road but always used a trolley jack when at home.
The best route is to source a Coram/Landrover bottle jack, which I now carry. It is the only one short enough to get under the axle and give sufficient lift due to a double ram system. It is squat and ahs a good wide base.

It would be interesting if anyone has an owner's manual for the older Eribas that advises you to use that square box section as a jacking point. In the new Eribas it specifically instructs you to only use the axle?

Hi Steve. Although I do now carry a bottle jack as well, I still carry and use the side jack you describe. Mine if from an old AUDI but they say that the ones from old VW Campers are a good fit. Yours sounds fine.

The main drawback as you notice, is the size of the footplate and you need to pay particular attention to the van's handbrake if you are not attached to the tow vehicle. Make sure that the van is pushed backwards once the brake is applied so that the hand brake if fully locked on.

Your footplate modification sound like a good idea.

Although there are mixed opinions on this type of jack, if used correctly it certainly is the quickest method of changing a wheel especially as on the roadside your van will be very low to the ground in the event of a flat tyre.

Thanks for the replies.
V... so there isn’t any box section on newer models? Ours isn’t even built yet!

The safest route is a 2000kg trolley jack, which is what I use at home and used to carry in our Troll many years ago. If you cannot go down this route then the bottle jack you want to look for is below. You need the model with the bent round bar cradle top like this, and you must get it with the two or three piece tubular handle. When sat on a plywood base this is very stable.

I would advise sourcing one second hand unless you have very deep pockets.

Correct sir. Fits nicely in a boot bag housed in my gas locker.

That's handy as I will be using a Disco 1 to tow, so built in jack carrier LOL

You would be lucky to get a butter knife in the open end box section on my 2015 Familia My old Puck use to have the larger open ended box section, however I personally wouldn't use it as a jacking point as it wasn't load bearing in my opinion.

Here is a bit of interesting info from the Eriba manuals which I can find up until 1993, that square section may well be a jacking point. The later manuals only advise to place the jack under the axle.

My old MGB has a similar kind of jacking point and factory jack, however anybody who has an MGB knows to stay clear of this as it normally results in the sill been ripped if there is any hint of rot.

For no other reason than this photo turned up on the German Eriba Site today so I thought it worth copying:-

I think you are out of luck there Andy. That car jack is designed to notch around the strengthened sill of your car. I'm sure a strapping chap like you could lift your Puck and kick a couple of blocks under the axle though.

I do have a hydraulic jack in a box that might make its way into the Tardis...
