Do we expect too much?

For a while hubby and me have been looking out for a Puck , a bit small for us but it will fit in our garage. As the prices have soared I expect it will be a while before we look hard. One of the things we have found is that in quite a few cases, when we ask if the Pucks have been serviced the answer is no but the sellers can guarantee that there is no damp in their Eribas.. some sellers go on to say that if we knew Eribas we would know that damp is not an issue. Having owned 3 Hymers ncluding our present Nova we do know that water ingress can be as much a problem in them as with any caravan. Are we being unreasonable to insist that any future purchase will have a full service report and water ingress check? We feel that it would be insane to part with such a large amount of money just on the off chance that we were capable of doing a thorough enough check on a Puck. We had one of our "it could only happen to us" moments not long ago. We went to have a look at a beautiful yellow puck advertised on Ebay. The seller told us to go round the back of the house to view. The large back garden was what looked to be a mini travellers site full of caravans with people in them , Van's advertising tarmac work and children running around with dogs everywhere. We decided to pass on that one and made a run for it . I think it will probably be a Puck off a dealer if prices drop, if not then we wont bother .

The last Puck came off the production line in December 2010, so I would be very surprised to find one with a full Hymer/Eriba service history and water ingress record. When my 2017 van is out of the warranty/water ingress cover it will not be going back to a main dealer. I will treat it like most of us do our cars when out of manufactures warranty and take it to what we hope is a good independent. I would also expect when buying a van out of warranty to get some recent paperwork of a service/damp check. I do not think this is unreasonable and would not buy a van without it.

There does seem to be a section of Eriba owners who believe that because Touring's are generally more robust than WWB's that preventative maintenance isn't necessary. Obviously, as they get older the opposite is true, in that servicing is required both for safety and comfort reasons and the older any van gets the more likely something may go wrong/break/wear out. Very often these are the same people who've bought into the cult aspect of Eribas and have no experience or concept of what caravanning entails. More recently there's also been a number of faux dealers jumping on the band wagon of increased prices.

I think it's a case of caveat emptor. If you were buying a car from a private seller and needed reassurance that it was what it was claimed to be, you would employ the services of a competent mechanic to give it the once over for you prior to purchase. The AA and RAC used to do this for a fee. Same with a caravan, get a trusted caravan engineer, preferably one used to dealing with Eribas, to vet the van for you before parting with your money.

Kool Classics offer such a service and John at Neston Caravan Services offers it too.

A wicked thought here, given KC's new potential status as an authorised dealer. Why would we trust them to inspect and advise on a potential purchase, when few would trust the Poole, Highbridge, Tebay, Lowdham dealerships on the same basis?

Trust no one! Get a damp meter and poke about everywhere with it when looking at prospective vans.

Hi Ellen, where are you based?
We’re selling a puck and are based in Nottinghamshire. I must admit we’ve not got any reports other than the brake service we had done about two years ago. But happy for you to poke around and have a look. We bought it 2 years ago and have now bought a familia hence selling the puck (I’ll miss her but not enough space for a big dog).
We’re the second owner and prior to us having it it was kept in a garage. It was our first caravan (keen campers never thought we’dget a caravan 🤣) we were worried after reading stuff on damp but it felt so solid we were happy to buy, probably naively! If you really want a guarantee then there’s the option to purchase from a dealer.
Let me know if you’re close, happy to just show you around pros/cons etc

Hello and thank you so much for your kind offer of a nosey around your puck, we are based near Manchester but not a million miles away. Please could you message me the details of you little Puck, thank you. Good luck with your Familia, we had a 310 and had a dalmatian and huge German shepherd who toured around the country with us. Our Familia was our bed and the awning our living room, happy days.
