Aside from the obvious use of inferior materials on newer vans (ie: prodigious use of MDF in place of wood or ply), is it possible that a lot of the problems experienced by owners come down to the luck of the draw?
I mean that since the vans are mostly hand-built then a lot depends upon the workmanship and diligence of the assembler. In over 3 years I have never had a door or drawer open that shouldn't have, nor an overhead locker falling open and damaging the hinge point. I can imagine that if the catches and striker-plates are slightly misaligned then it could lead to no end of future problems. As a precaution I did remove all the ridiculously small self-tappers and re-insert with a dab of epoxy but nothing has ever opened in transit.

I've often wondered how much of the van interior is pre-assembled before fitting. I believe that Hymer make their own furniture from scratch, whereas many manufacturers buy in, especially from a big company in Italy. But, for instance, are the rows of Touring roof lockers assembled elsewhere and the whole length screwed to the frame, or do they fit a wooden framework to the van and finish of with hinges and locker doors individually fitted afterwards?
I had nothing to do on this hot afternoon
But to settle down and write you a line

Robin,
I believe you will find the cabinet work is plywood and not mdf. It is just very low density and not good at taking a screw fixing.
