New Rear Light Clusters
New Rear Light Clusters

I'm thinking of changing my rear light clusters for something a bit more slimline but roughly the same overall dimensions.
The ones I am looking at are all LED but there is a warning on some of the products that I may have to fit a resistor to stop the flashers from blinking too fast.
Has anyone experienced this and, if the car is not equipped with LEDs does that present another problem?

Not a factory fit but fitted from new by my regular Tow Bar Specialist.
Yes the car does recognise that I've got a trailer on the back and the indiciators make a different squeaking noise when the electrics are plugged in.

Does the car tell you anything if you've got a caravan bulb out?
Do you get a warning on the dash? If you do, then you'll probably get a warning if you replace the caravan's taillight bulbs with LEDs and probably a bonkers indicator flash too.
Because the resistance of an LED bulb is very low compared to a halogen filament job, the car can't differentiate between a dud halogen (or a non-existent one, which is the same thing, really) and a fully functioning LED.
That's the reason for having to add extra resistors.
It's often less of an issue with more recent models which incorporate LEDs in the lighting as standard.
Does all that guff make any sense?

Makes sense to me. I tried to replace my caravan reversing light with a beeping led one. It did not work. I thought the bulb was faulty but when bench tested it worked fine.

I've shied away from fitting LED's on driving lights, where not original equipment, just in case of probs. Inside the van though, they're fine. And really, LED's inside save battery power and/or the site's electricity bill. On the exterior of a car or van they're powered by the alternator, so who cares.
I had nothing to do on this hot afternoon

Thanks Pete. Yes it all makes sense. The car does tell me if there's a car light out but I'm unsure about a trailer lights because I always physically make sure that the trailer/Eriba has all lights working before the journey.
Thanks for the other comments too. There doesn't appear to be much out there that is not LED and the ones I was looking at also have a built in number plate light

Just for interest, these are the ones I was looking at:-
Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284300587332
Dimensions: 31.7cm x 11.7cm x 3.8cm ( L X W X D )
The existing lights are:- 31.0cm x 10cm x 6.0cm. So not much in it. I particularly like the shallower depth and the number plate light.

If you’d rather, I could drop what I’m doing, drive over and try it for you

Generally speaking if your indicators beep with the trailer plugged in then you have either a bypass relay or just a plain buzzer, these are fine with led lights. Vsk electrics don't beep as a bulb out light comes on the dash when one fails, these can be temperamental where led bulbs are fitted (Land rover and iveco are bad for this even from the factory) though this is getting better on the new kits.
