Spare wheel
Hi everyone
I'm new to caravanning and bought my Eriba just last month. I've had a single trip out for a couple of nights, lovely.
I have a question about spare wheel and where to store it, also I don't have one yet!! what do you do? do you carry a spare or what? do you carry a jack and wheel brace?
Many thanks for your help
Rgs Simon

A spare wheel to some of us is essential. A steel rim will do the job and something can often be sourced cheaply second hand, just ensure you put a 102 load rating commercial tyre on it. The spare usually lives under the back of the van. Dom Fox who trades out of Norfolk has been advertising a carrier that may fit.
As regards a jack. A cheap trolley jack is best, but one bottle jack will fit under the axle. It is a Coram and used by Land Rover. Be careful as others may look suitable but are to tall.

I bought one of these off Ebay recently. It looked new when it arrived and fits in the gas locker. Works perfectly.

Thanks everyone. I'll get a jack and the Range Rover one looks ideal.
What size wheel do I need? again any thoughts as to where to source these?
I can get the dimensions of the tyres off the existing wheels
Thanks
Our steel wheels on our 530 are:-
5 1/2J 14inch, 5 stud

Hi Simon,
We've had out van for 3 years now and (touch wood) never had a flat. First thing we did after purchasing was to replace the tyres with new ones .
Our spare is tucked away in a cage under the van and I admit i would not fancy trying to remove it by the roadside or for that matter trying to jack up the van.
I wonder if any forum members have views on tyreweld emergency kits instead, or as well as, a spare. I know they make any repairs to a flat tyre impossible but it would have the advantage of getting you back on the road quickly and then on to somewhere with the right gear to change the tyre.

I would think you would be very lucky to get an effective fix for a caravan tyre using tyre weld. These work ok if you get a nail in the tyre, but in the event of a puncture to a caravan tyre, by the time you discover it and pull over, the tyre would be beyond repair. Even if you could re-inflate it, it would be potentially dangerous to run at any speed so at best would only enable you to get to a safer spot. I would consider a spare to be essential even if it is carried in the car boot.

The easiest solution is to get a spare steel wheel and and a cradle like Colin suggested, however you will also need a set of extra wheel nuts made for steel wheels if your Eriba has alloys. As regards changing it I would only do it myself as as a last resort, the best option is to join a breakdown service that will include your caravan just like Greenflag Mayday.

If you do decide to carry a spare in the car then IKEA do a clear storage zip bag that is perfect for the job. For 10 years I used one for the spare I had to buy for a VW Touran.

It's the Dimpla bag and they are also a perfect fit for a Brompton folding bike.

Also note that if you have alloy wheels on your Eriba that a steel wheel would need different wheel bolts.
