Hi all
Off to france in a few weeks, looking for any advice on security issues?
Wheel lock or hitch lock which is better ? I know both would be better but if only one for short park wheel clamp type?

Any suggestions will be great!

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter. If I was to have a choice of one or the other, I think I'd go for a wheel clamp..
There is a thread currently running regarding clamps New purchase and you should be looking for one that is fairly portable and easy to fit.

I also have an Alko hitch lock, this allows me to tow when it is locked on, stops at services are easier as we don't have to lock the wheel, we also have a milenco wheel clamp for when on site.
Some interesting debates about towing with a lock on but I have found no problems

You may find that fitting of a hitchlock is a condition of your insurance.
Wheel clamp-wise look at the lighter Bulldog and Milenco models

We use the Alko tow hitch with locking cover, it goes on before departure and comes off on arrival on site or at home we use a large heavy Nemesis wheel clamp, we've had it about 7 years so it's faded and rusty in places, but I keep it well oiled and greased, I can have it on or off in under a minute It's a bit like reversing, it's just practice

If we were buying now, I'd go for a through the wheel type OR maybe even a chain (like the motorcycle locks) backed up with a good quality padlock, Ingersoll, Chubb etc

window locks, we were robbed as we slept in France, they opened the window and took everything they could reach, we have since fitted milenco window alarms
http://www.justmilenco.co.uk/MILENCO-Sle...Alarm-pack-of-6
and a set of these

I know it's belt and braces, but when its happened once you tend to get jittery .

Should you be inclined to think about window alarms like those Milenco ones, there are considerably less expensive ones on the market.

This alone - on their web page - would put me off buying from Milenco:

"This alarm has been specifically designed to protect you in your Caravan or Motorhome and also to combat the problem of sleeping gas attacks that are becoming more common at Motorway services on mainland Europe."

It's scaremongering based on anecdote, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm not really concerned about the make of alarm, I have them to stop myself being robbed or worse again.

Are they sticky backed Dave? They look to be similar to the ones fitted to house doors and windows.
Randa
Yes they are. Sorry, I've just read the fitting instructions

I wouldn't disagree.

I was just trying to be helpful in suggesting that there are less expensive ways of doing the same job, that's all.

It's a neat visual deterrent, but I reckon if anyone is determined to jemmy a flimsy plastic window held by a flimsy plastic catch there isn't really much you can do to stop them.

I'm sorry. I'll stop being so negative.

I kind of subscribe to the view that as far as a caravan is concerned, the more strenuous and obvious your efforts at preventing a break in the more it looks as if you've got something worth nicking inside.
