Well...........some gentle exercise for the back this morning replacing the elastic.

Tools and bits needed.
Scissors,
string at least long enough to go round the pop top
lighter to seal ends
4 small cable tie's
4mm new elastic (recommend 10 meter length)

Open a vent (middle one door side probably best)

Tie string both sides of middle securely (stops the ends disappearing when you cut the old elastic)
cut elastic and draw out of the pop top guiding the string in as you go ...........remember you have 3 vents you can reach through to help guide the string through.............don't forget to feed the elastic out of the vent as you pull it through.
Once all the string is out and the old elastic is in the van cut the string from the elastic.

You should now have string all round the pop top ..................tie the new elastic to one end of the string

And feed it through using all vents if needed.

Now some notes on where I went wrong..................... I bought 5mm elastic instead of 4mm which is too thick to tie a knot in and still thread it into the corner pockets so had to secure the ends with cable ties............

Normally after getting the tension right (tight enough to pull the canvas in as you close the pop top) you would feed the knot into a corner pocket to hide it.

I was worried the cable tie's might damage the canvas there so taped up the join and manoeuvred it to the rear of the van to sit in front of the rear vent where it will not show too much.

If you buy the correct (4mm) elastic its a fairly simple job to do and takes about 1\2 an hour, the most important thing to note is to get the tension reasonably correct..............not tight enough and the canvas will not pull in ........too tight and the elastic cores will not last as long and you will need to do the job more often.

Its better to buy too much rather than too little elastic its not expensive and you can use it for all sorts of other jobs.

Also see here

If you use the old shockcord to pull the new into place, you can eliminate the string step. Also, on a Triton, I reckon 5 metres is enough to do the job.

Update...i bought the elastic cord from Bouncing Rabbit and have now successfully installed it. I cut the old saggy elastic and tied one end to the new cord and pulled it through all the way round, being tall i can reach quite easily. I then tied the ends together and hid the knot in the corner pocket as suggested! I have a feeling i needn't have bought such thick cord but it will prob last longer and the colour matches!! Thanks again to all who offered help and advice! Now.....what to do next???

Did you know? cos I didn't... & it is the best/easiest place to get size/colour/length of shock cord at www.bouncingrabbit.co.uk (found on this v useful forum! thanks!), that they also have an eBay shop Werbung: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Elastic-Bungee...r-/331441070777

I'm using 4mm white for the poptop, not so readily available elsewhere... replacing the 2mm that seems to've done the job perfectly well for the last few years.

Always pull the canvas in by hand at the scissors ends,
if you are lax the canvas WILL be cut!
