Windows 10 Upgrade?

I had a pop-up message on my PC on Saturday telling me that my free copy of Windows 10 was downloaded and ready for installation.

My original intention had been to delay installing it for a few months so that any bugs could be ironed out by the other beta testers (i.e. the general public) but in the end I thought, "Sod it!" and clicked the button.

It took quite a while to install with lots of automatic shutting down and restarting but everything went very smoothly and there was no dreaded 'blue screen of death'. The only problem I experienced was with my screen resolution and that was quickly solved by downloading the latest driver for my super-whizzo graphics card.

Everything is working fine but I've not been blown away by any new features although, to be fair, I don't use social media or cloud storage so little has changed.

My one tip would be to select the custom installation options and to uncheck all the boxes for automatic sharing of your usage data with Microsoft which by default are set to 'on'.

Has anyone else taken the plunge and if so, what was your experience?

I'm running it on the desk top and the laptop as I'm a bit of a nerd with that sort of thing.
Like you I have turned off every option to tell Microsoft what I do on my pc's (none of their soddin business)
I also don't use the cloud I have my own backup and on-line storage options.
Did you switch off cortana............it tells Microsoft everything from what time you get up to if you put sugar or sweetners in your tea.

Had to search out some settings I needed that had moved but apart from that and disabling the browser so I can carry on with Firefox and my own mail program, not a lot has changed except the start screen that disappeared in windows 8 and 8.1 has been re-instated.

Caution .............very big download if you are thinking about doing it you will need a good broadband speed and allow at least a couple of hours ...........or longer to do the upgrade............then a day to get in all the crannies and get it running how you want it to.

We've just gone from antique machines and bought a new laptop. So we didn't have to make a double trip to Swansea, himself was 'confident we (meaning me) could install new Office, Photoshop etc. and do Windows 10 installation'. Going from XP to Windows 8 was a shock (programs are now called apps?) and several days later all was installed apart from the upgrade, which I had reserved. (Very nice people somewhere in the ether when you get stuck.) I had several conflicting messages to say the update was ready, was downloaded, but pressed ahead and it actually installed quite quickly. Somehow I've managed to change my logging in password to my email(?) but it is still letting me in. I'm not into saving pictures or documents remotely. The only real annoyance is that I keep zooming in by mistake - too many fingers on the pad!

As I sit in a mess of knitting I prefer not to use a mouse - I'd only lose it! It's just that it doesn't have separate buttons.

That's the Royal we.

As for me, I'm not very happy at all for when I contacted Microsoft and enquired about downloading an app. for my computer they said they didn't have one for an Acorn Electron

Have you had it from new? or did you find it in an antique shop?

I like the mouse due to lack of dexterity, motor control in the hands and lack of brain power.
I think the update is aimed at SmartPhone interuse and we haven't one.
Won't be bothering, 8.1 is enough for me and haven't mastered that yet.

I find the whole concept of talking to a machine by prefacing every remark with, "Hey, Cortana" completely ludicrous.

This is how they should have done it:

It's strange how sinister the name 'Dave' can be made to sound:

I've still got my Acorn Electron (I couldn't afford a BBC) and I can remember queuing at WH Smith's in Southampton to upgrade from a Spectrum.

It seems so long ago.

I am happy with Windows 7, I had win.8 on Sues new laptop and it was rubbish!
Windows 8 did not last long and I am waiting for Windows 11 or 16 both should
be out before the New Year.

All very well, but anyone who sends out mass emailings of articles to friends without removing all email addresses from the headers and substituting bcc is inviting spam and hacker attack against all those listed contacts.

While on the subject of free software...................did you ever use Microsoft office..............at work maybe? and think I wish I had that on my home pc but it costs a lot of money and I can't afford it.

Well you can have an office suite on your home pc free of charge

Its called open office and is a free to all fully functional office suite that will open windows documents like word and excel and allow you to see and edit them.

Its pretty much just like Microsoft office only doesn't cost a fortune

Microsoft office came with my custom built home workstation but not on my laptop and I need to take some spreadsheets like my planner and accounts etc with me in the van so I use open office on the laptop

Read about it and get it free from here

I have made the mistake of selecting express settings when installing windows 10. How do I rectify this so I do not tell Microsoft everything?
Simple instructions for an increasingly simple mind.
